Tuukka Rask Is a Fantastic Finn

Tyler Myers is having a terrific season for the Buffalo Sabers. The 6'8, 20 year old defenseman has been tearing up the league logging over 23 mins/game while currently sitting 3rd in rookie scoring. Almost any other year he would be a lock for the Calder trophy. This year however that honor should go to the Boston Bruins Tuukka Rask.

The Finnish netminder has Blown away the competition in my opinion. Leading the league in both GAA (1.99) and SV%(930), Rask has beat out the current Vezina winner in Tim Thomas for the starters job. Despite Bostons offensive woes (30th in Goals/game), Rask has willed the B's into playoff contention. They control their own destiny being a mere 2 points out of 6th or 9th in the Eastern conference. The only thing keeping Tuukka from being handed the calder now (besides the whole awards show after the season) is some peoples hangup on his games played (43) and his win total (20)

Lets break this down one at a time. As far as games played are concerned, 43 (37 are starts) which will probably be 46 (40) by seasons end, is more than 1/2 the season and should have considerably less weight than GAA and SV% as those are the two best examples of goalies play. You can't fault Rask for Claude Juliens insistance on playing Thomas even when Thomas was struggling with a broken hand earlier in the year.

Wins are probably the most overrated stat ever as far as goalies are considered. If you went by wins Dwayne Roloson, Marty Turco, and Cristobal Huet would all be considered to have had a better season than Rask. None of those 3 have a SV% over .915 or GAA under 2.5, and all have at least 46 Games started. Guaranteed that if any of the other Vezina candidites (Miller,Brodeur,Bryzgalov) were in Boston, they would be battling Edmonton in the "Fall for Hall".

Simply put Rask=Calder+Vezina+Hart
