5 reasons why I dislike the John Cena character
Since 2006 it has become popular among WWE fans and wrestling fans in general to hate John Cena. Though now a days most people see John Cena haters as just wanting to follow the trend of John Cena hating. I will admit that I was a John Cena fan from October 2005(when I started watching wrestling again after 3 years) to April 2007. I cheered Cena in his matches, said you cant see me and even had a replica spinner belt. In 2007 my hatred for the Cena character began after he defeated HBK at WM 23. I got bored of seeing Cena retain after every ppv and I was tired of his matches on RAW ending the same way week after week. Anyways these are my 5 reasons why I dislike the Cena character.
Cena's gimmick has definitely changed from the one that made him popular. 5 years ago before Cena was drafted to RAW he was a wrestler that wore throw back jerseys and dissed his opponents in a rap before a match. This Cena was entertaining and popular with all ranges of the audience. After Cena won the WWE Champ. at WM 21 his rapper gimmick slowly but surely died, especially when he was drafted to RAW. He stopped wearing throwbacks and donned shirts that the WWE made for him. Cena's character took a big change after he starred in The Marine, he stopped wearing jean shorts and started wearing camouflage shorts. He also did a salute to the crowd and started wearing dog tags. Around the time Cena feuded with Kurt Angle the boos started. Cena went from an entertaining and new gimmick to a boring and repetitive gimmick in a year's time. The WWE tries to much to recreate the magic that they had with Hogan with Cena. John's superman gimmick and defining the odds gimmick has gotten stale and boring and it's time for a change.
Cena's promos have like his gimmick started to suffer once he won the WWE Champ. at WM 21. We usually hear the same thing in every promo. Cena comes to the ring and starts off calm then he goes on about how he has to defeat this guy or how he loves the WWE so much or how he will fight with all he's got. Cena's promos come in two types: Cena talking about an opponent that he has to face and people's doubts about him beating that opponent, or Cena all energetic and crazy over either defeating an opponent that people had doubts about or Cena trying to ponder to the crowd and get them excited about some match later on that night, and then there's the third Cena promo type, the mad/sad/disappointed Cena. This Cena is usually mad about what an opponent has done to him, and talks about how that opponent should be afraid of what Cena will do to them. The sad/disappointed Cena talks about how he let his fans or the "wwe universe" down by losing a match and vows to make up for it and we get a motivational speech. I think if Cena's promos weren't so predictable he might be a little more entertaining than he already is. I think the WWE should let Cena rap in his promos again.
One of the main reasons why people dislike Cena is his matches. We get Cena getting beat down for the 1st 10 or 15 minutes then we have Cena mount a comeback and win in heroic fashion. The only time Cena is in the drivers seat is when he's competing in a squash match. I have no problem with a heroic finish every now and then but not in every single match. I want to see Cena have a back and forth wrestling match with someone, not Cena overcoming the odds and winning after hitting his " 5 moves of doom". I don't want to see Cena get hit with devastating move after devastating move only to kick out and beat his a opponent with his attitude adjustment or STF after the 1st try. The WWE needs to let Cena wrestle and not make him out to be superman in every match.
WWE's portrayl of him as "superman"
When I say superman, I mean the WWE making Cena nearly impossible to beat. Unless your name is Randy Orton, Triple H, The Undertaker, Edge, or Batista forget about pinning John Cena anytime soon. You can also forget about Cena tapping, in fact 4 of the 5 guys that I have listed have tapped out to Cena to lose in a championship match; two at WM. I don't think John Cena has tapped out since 2004, that's 6 years. Also when was the last time some up and coming talent pinned Cena in a match. When was the last time a heel beat Cena in at a ppv cleanly in a fair match that wasn't a gimmick match. The WWE is making Cena out to be this unbeatable force of nature which makes people hate him even more. They need to let people see Cena get cleanly beat by a heel not see Cena take chair shot after chair shot before finally losing. It'll make Cena's matches more entertaining and people will actually want to see the outcome of the match.
His wrestling since 2005
John Cena is not a bad wrestler, in fact John Cena is a decent wrestler who could put on a great match without someone carrying him through the match. From 2002-2004 John Cena had some pretty good matches on SD! and on ppvs. His match with Brock Lesnar at Backlash 2003 was really good and Cena lead most of the match. His debut match with Kurt Angle in 2002 is probably one off the best debut matches I've seen. Cena has also managed to put on watchable matches with the great khali, a guy whose a worse wrestler than Cena. Ever since 2005 Cena has been carried in most of his matches by his opponent, even JBL carried him in their match at WM 21. The WWE has watered down Cena so much since 2005 that people consider him the worst wrestler in the WWE, which he's not. John Cena before all the hoopla used a variety wrestling moves, even drop kicks. Now it's mostly punches, shoulder blocks, clotheslines, and counters that he performs. If the WWE let Cena keep his original wrestling from when he was a mid carder he might get more respect than he does now and maybe people wouldn't be so mad when he wins a world title.
