Who Will Lead? Tottenham Look for Inspiration In the Champions League Fight
At first glance, Tottenham have a squad of very unique players.
Here are just a few: A 6'7 pasty striker with an unbelievably deft touch in Peter Crouch. His foil--a 5'6 bodybuilder turned deadly finisher in Jermaine Defoe. Modric, another pint sized superstar in the making, who can twist and turn as though he is attending a 50's sock hop every Saturday. And in the back, a Cameroonian in Bassong who appears to be a clone of our very own "Ledly the Deadly."
Unfortunately, while these aforementioned players will have an impact in the upcoming fixtures, they are not the ones Spurs are relying on.
There are the obvious reoccurring injuries to King and Woodgate that truly damage the squad week in and week out. With King feeling fit enough to help down the final stretch, will it be his presence that can turn the tide back in Spurs favor? Or will he suffer another knock upon his return leaving us to ask, what if?
Two more key players out, are starting right back Vedran Corluka and WHL favourite Michael Dawson. Kyle Walker showed enough against Portsmouth to suggest he may one day have what it takes, but giving up 2 penalties away at the Stadium of Light proved he is still a ways off. Corluka is also a much stronger defender, which hey, you don't have to be Harry Redknapp to notice that is where we are lacking.
As far as the midfield goes, LENNON, LENNON, LENNON. We need a consistent right mid, who stays on the wing only cutting inside when a clear cut opportunity arises. You may hate Spurs, but if you're an England fan, you need him back for us first. Pace, brains, increased crossing, and a hunger to drop back and defend is what is missing from the eyebrowed wonder. It is the Croatians, Modric and Kranjcar, that I worry about game in and game out tracking back to help defend.
With Wilson back in the fold, and hopefully for good, the return of Huddlestone is all the more inticing. Spurs best football this season came when Tom and Wilson partnered the middle of the field. In these trying times it is necessarry to go with the sure thing (even if it means dropping Modric).
This season has been very different for Spurs. The young promising players we have been building on are now starting to show. Lennon, Huddlestone, and the others on the bench are itching to get on the pitch to effect the title race.
No one player will capture the headlines (*cough* TEVEZ), but rather, the squad must come together an assist eachother on the road to glory!
