David Haye Batters John Ruiz in England: Retains WBA Title

Tyler CurtisApr 3, 2010

David Haye showed today that he is the real deal at heavyweight. John Ruiz isn’t the world's best heavyweight, but he is a durable heavyweight. He has also been a top heavyweight for 10 years.

He has a very good chin and doesn’t go down often. Today, 30 seconds into the fight Haye dropped the ultra-durable Ruiz with a perfect right hand.

Ruiz got up and somehow made it out of the round. He was put down again on a rabbit punch, but it was counted as a knockdown.

How Ruiz made it out of the round was unreal. To see the knockdown you would have thought no way, no how is that man getting up.

Haye showed he has true heavyweight power. The fight with Valuev was not impressive, but it's clear he just wanted to win the title against him.

Haye threw great combinations, his power looked good, and his speed looked unreal for a man his size.

Ruiz started the round by coming forward (which amazed me) but he couldn’t get his offense going. Haye lost a point for the rabbit punch, so the round was even.

Haye was just too fast and landed the harder shots. Haye’s foot speed and movement looked great; he was rolling off the ropes and kept Ruiz out of position.

Ruiz landed some solid shots in the second round but it was clear that he was still a little woozy from the first-round knockdown.

By the end of the round, he looked to have regained his head, and the fact he was still standing amazed me. Haye was up two rounds to none.

Ruiz started to get on track in the third but not enough. Ruiz had a busted nose and was taking some solid shots. His level of determination is something to behold.

Ruiz started to throw some combinations but didn’t land anything telling. Haye looked super relaxed with his left arm swinging in front of him.

Haye landed two solid combinations in the last minute of the round. It looks like Haye is just too fast for Ruiz. Haye is up three to none.

Ruiz started the fourth by coming forward but not throwing many punches. When he would let his hands go, it was only one shot at a time.

Haye landed a nice body-head combination with about 1:30 left in the round. Haye was just too fast and was in and out before Ruiz could land anything.

When Haye put his back on the ropes, Ruiz was having some success but not enough to win rounds in my opinion.

Ruiz threw a lot of punches and won the fourth on work rate. Haye simply didn’t throw much that round.

With only four rounds in the book Haye was breathing heavily. Ruiz started out the fifth throwing punches Haye then opened up and started to batter Ruiz on the ropes. The speed advantage for Haye is ridiculous.

Haye is pumping out the jab and it cant miss with it. Ruiz is basically following Haye around the ring. When he does land it has no effect.

Haye put Ruiz down again at the very end of the round. He landed a legitimate shot followed by a rabbit punch. They counted it and Ruiz is down four to one with the knockdown.

Haye’s work rate was down, but he was obviously landing the harder shots.

Ruiz started the sixth by pushing forward and doing much of the same. Ruiz was down again and was just getting battered at this point. He claims that every knockdown is a rabbit punch.

Ruiz has a bruised left eye and is getting smashed. Haye amped up the pressure and was landing very hard shots.

You could tell that Haye wanted to send a statement to the American fans. It was clear in the sixth that this is Haye's world and Ruiz is just visiting it.

Haye’s defense looked very good, too. His head movement was good and more times than not, Ruiz was swinging at air. Haye is up five rounds to one. At this point, Haye had landed 40 percent of his punches.

The seventh started the same with Ruiz coming forward but not punching. Haye would throw a punch every now and then. With about a minute left, Haye landed a sharp one, two.

Ruiz looked beaten up at this point. He wasn’t landing anything and was getting caught by everything. Haye is up six rounds to one.

Ruiz again starts by following Haye around the ring. Haye landed a good uppercut 30 seconds in. Haye was just throwing one at a time and it seemed that he just needed to put punches together to end matters.

Ruiz has a rock solid chin. He took a massive right hand with about 40 seconds left in the round and didn’t even budge. He had a better round but still lost it. He is down seven rounds to one.

The rounds were falling into a familiar pattern as Ruiz just followed Haye around not throwing punches. Haye was content to sit back and throw one shot at a time.

Haye revved it up, landed a good left-right-left combination and a good follow up left to the head. Ruiz’s corner throws in the towel.

Haye retained his WBA title with a TKO at 2:01 of round nine.

Ruiz was only knocked out for the second time in his career. Ruiz had a badly broken nose and was overall battered. Haye looked great in this fight. His power was top notch, his speed was way too much, and his defense looked great.

You can say what you want about Haye, but he is a force and anyone, even the Klitschkos, will have a tough night again him. Even if he cant beat one of the Klitschkos, he is surely the most exciting heavyweight in the world right now.

Hopefully in the next couple days this will be on www.youtube.com. If it is I suggest you check out Haye’s best career win.

Just one final note. I watched this on Justin.tv and there were over 84,000 people watching. The heavyweight division isn’t dead and David “Hayemaker” Haye is just the man to bring it back.
