Coming into this year it must have been said thousands of times...watch out for this incoming freshman class...well let me make it a thousand and one.
After seeing the stats, highlights, and games including these fabulous diaper dandies there's no other word to describe them than "AWESOME WITTA CAPITAL A BABY!"
Lets start with my favorite Derrick Rose. Rose joins a Memphis team that reached the elite 8 last year and is bringing all their key players back this season. Rose not only showed how freakish of an athlete he is but he also showed that he can be a point guard which is a scary thought after seeing his opening game putback.
Rose so far is averaging 19ppg, 5.5 rpg, 1 spg, 2bpg, and an assit to turnover ratio of 2:1.
Next up is Eric Gordon in his premiere he had 33pts 6rebs shot 60% from the field and also had an assist to turnover ratio of 2:1. Pair this tremendous scorer with the low post presence of Indiana senior D.J. White and you have trouble
As I watched highlights of Gordon's first game I can remember about 3-4 times when Gordon sat wide open on the perimeter and drained threes.
Then there's the big man of the group Kevin Love of UCLA, who only averaged 21.5ppg and 11 rpg through his first two performances(these two games were played without fantastic point guard Darren Collison by the way).
Kevin Love is what UCLA needs....a big man. He may only be 6'9" but he knows how to dominate down low as he outsmarts his defender and on top of his tremendous skill down low the man can step back and make it rain from deep.
Michael Beasley is best described by the word beast. Following his first two games "Beast"-ly is averaging 31ppg 19rpg 2bpg and is shooting 62% from the field.
Beasley has the talent, stroke and athleticism to play the wing but he also has the intensity and brute strength to throw a few people around on the block.
Beasley only adds to Kansas State athletic roster which is home to another freak of nature Bill Walker--would be a freshmen this year but enrolled at KSU earlier and was deemed eligible to play last year.
Now the frosh you probably have heard the most about coming into this season O.J. Mayo--yes the guy who recruited himself to USC--was spectacular in his debut. Yes he did have 8 turnovers but i dont expect those numbers to stay up that high
Mayo had 32pts 7rebs and 4ast in the teams lost to Mercer(with all these early upsets i.e Gardner-Webb over Kentucky im looking forward tothis years tournament). I expect Mayo's point production to stay in this area and he pats the rest of his stats up.
Syracuse has a two-headed monster in Johnny Flynn and Donte Greene. Greene has been compaired to Carmelo Anthony, you remember the guy who only led the then Orangemen to a national title in his freshman year. Greene averages 16ppg and 7.5rpg through his first two.
Speaking of Carmelo and Syracuse Flynn only broke Melo's record for most points scored by a freshman in a opening game by dropping 28 on Sienna. Flynn didn't have the same point output in the second game but he showed leadership and clutchness especially after hitting the game winning three.
These are only seven of many great players in the 07-08 freshman class, others to keep an eye out for include: Kalin Lucas, Chris Allen (Michigan State), Kyle Singler, Taylor King (Duke), Austin Freeman (Georgetown), Jai Lucas, Nick Calathes (Florida), Corey Fisher, Corey Stokes (Villanova)
A case could be made for many more froshies in college basketball this year and i'm not saying if i didn't mention them then they're not good or even better than the names listed above i believe these select few will have the greatest impacts on their respective teams.
