Coaching Carousel : There May Be a New Porter in Town

With the final four set, this weekend, college basketball will be ready to wrap up what was a very unusual year.
In the Pac-10, this was a season to forget. Although not one team from the conference was nationally ranked, two bids did happen to sneak into the tournament.
For the Oregon Ducks, this was a season of farewells. Saying goodbye to senior guard, Tajuan Porter, whose 3-point shooting will be remembered as one of the Pac-10's best. Alongside Porter, leaving are forwards Lekendric Longmire and Jovean Catron. And last but not least, departing, is head coach Ernie Kent.
Kent's tenure at Oregon began in 1997. Despite posting only a 13-14 record in his first year, Kent's commitment to the team showed promise. 13 years later, Kent has five tournament appearances; including two elite eight runs.
One month ago, as the mediocre season ended, (EX) Athletic Director, Mike Belloti decided that Kent's run with Oregon will unfortunately come to a close.
Left coach-less, the rumors have began to fly about the possible replacement. Clarifying that Tom Izzo isn't intended on leaving his final four team, and that Tubby Smith is happy with the life he has, a new name, one that's logical, has sprung up in the mix.
Spending 17 years in the NBA, ten of which were in Portland, Terry Porter might fit the suit for the opening job at Oregon. Being a two-time all-star, Porter knows a little something about the game. Although he's never coached at the college level, Porter's knowledge of the game, in terms of being a player, is something that very few coaches share.
As a relatively young coach, Porter's ability to build a relationship with the young guys is something that is overlooked. His NBA reputation will help his recruiting capability with being able to lure players in.
And yet, who can forget Phil Knight, whose paycheck always seems to make people smile. The facilities at Oregon speak for themselves, however, will Phil Knight's bond with Nike make any coach want to leave their home, and come to Eugene?
