Arsenal To Beat Wolves 2-0 Today.
After a thrilling Champions league quarter final on Wednesday night it's back to the bread and butter of the Champions league today as Wolves pay a visit to the Emirates to take us on at 3 p.m. this afternoon.
It's hardly bread and butter though as we enter our final six matches of the league season knowing that six wins in those games could possibly bring Arsenal our first league title in six seasons.
At this stage those six wins would seem to be a very big ask with the spine of our team decimated by injuries. We have Gallas, Cesc and RVP all out injured, and they are all players of the very highest quality.
Added to that we are also missing Arshavin, Ramsey, Gibbs, Djourou and we have Eduardo and Diaby who are permanently injury prone since their horrific injuries in the last few years.
We also have a squad who will be feeling the effects of a grueling season and the team spent a large part of Wednesday night chasing shadows.
A few weeks ago I would have been looking forward to a visit from Wolves as they weren't exactly playing very well, but their fortunes changed and they are now on such a good run that they find themselves five points above the relegation zone with six games left.
In the last four games they have won away from home to two of the teams below them and drawn away to Aston Villa and at home to Everton.
However, Arsenal aren't exactly on a poor run of form either having drawn at Birmingham last week and won their six games before that.
Even with all the players we have missing we can still field a team that are far superior to Wolves and should be able to take the game to them and get the three points that are an absolute must.
We will have to be wary of Doyle, Jones and Jarvis who are all in good form at the moment and also Wolves seem to be frequently scoring from set pieces which can be a weak point for us at times.
The best way to stop them getting anything from the game is for Arsenal to do to Wolves what Barcelona did to us and keep the ball on a permanent basis. Our pitch is big enough to chase them around it and first touch football in triangles can be a beautiful thing to watch as long as we have some end product as well.
The good news on the injury front is that both Clichy and Denilson are fit enough to be in the squad and that gives the manager what he needs most of all—options.
I am sure we will see Almunia in goals after his heroics of Wednesday night(except for the first goal) and the back four should see Vermaelen, Clichy, Sagna and either Campbell or Silvestre. With Gallas out we will need Campbell at the back on Tuesday night away to Barcelona which could mean that Silvestre will play today.
I think that Song is a fantastic defensive midfielder and he has filled in very well at centre back for us in the past but he was cruelly exposed by Barcelona on Wednesday night.
It's a big step up from playing in that position against average Premier league teams to playing against the best club side in the world, and if he played there every week I'm sure Song would become world class in that position. But it's not easy to just step in there every so often and expect to form a perfect partnership with the other players.
In midfield we should see Song anchoring with Diaby and Nasri in front of him, although it's quite possible that Denilson could play in any of those positions.
Our options in attack are limited a little bit but I expect Bendtner to start of course with probably Walcott and Rosicky in the wide positions. Bendtner may not have been great on Wednesday night but he played a huge part in both of our goals and Walcott made an enormous impact when he came on in the second half in that game.
Rosicky could become a very important player for us in the run in with his skill and experience. He isn't afraid to do the right things on the pitch and if he can stay fit I think he might be our match winner today.
I see Arsenal having a large majority of the play and Wolves looking to close us down and hit us on the break and from set pieces as is the norm at the Emirates against the majority of teams.
I'm hoping that Nasri and Rosicky will step up with Cesc out and that Walcott can continue on from Wednesday night and use the size of our pitch to cause real problems for them.
I'm predicting a 2-0 win for Arsenal with the deciding goal in the last 10 minutes as would seem to happen in every game we win these days. I think Bendtner and Rosicky might get those goals and I hope that we can come through the game without any more injuries ahead of our trip to the Nou Camp on Tuesday night.
I'll be going to the supporters club to watch the game but I'll be on the seven up as I have to go out tonight and starting to drink at three in the afternoon isn't recommended if you plan to go out that night. I'll try to keep up on Tweetdeck on my shiny new iphone and I'll be keeping an eye on all the other games too as the Fantasy football is always near the front of my mind.
It's strange when you're discussing the scores of other games and hoping for your fantasy players to get goals, assists or clean sheets. We have a league going in the supporters club with a nice prize at the end of the season and after coming second last season I was hoping to go one better this season, but my chances ended last week when I transferred Cesc in and Lampard out and Lampard went on to get a massive 56 points for anybody who had him as captain.
In the Oleole league the fantasy expert who is Football Guy has come back from his dreadful start to the season and now sits only one place and 32 points behind me. He has also guaranteed that he will finish ahead of me this season and I have to make sure that doesn't happen.
Before we play today there is a game between the two teams above us in the league and if we are to get right back into the title race I think that a draw is an absolute must in that game.
If a draw is the outcome and we get our win it leaves us within striking distance of both of them again and it becomes a three way race with five games left but a win for either team would leave us in a very difficult position as the winning team in that game would have to drop points on two occasions in their last five games for us to overhaul them considering the vast difference in goal difference between us and both of them.
The boss had an awful lot to say at his press conference and it can be read on the official club site, but the main points were about Cesc and Gallas. He admitted that it was a risk to play Gallas and in hindsight it was a mistake, and that Gallas will be out for closer to five weeks than three but he will probably be available to play for us in the Champions league final.
Arshavin should be back in three weeks despite the player saying otherwise and he thinks Cesc will be available to play in the World Cup for Spain.
He said that it wasn't a mistake to play Cesc after the knock he took against Birmingham but that that knock probably did contribute to his broken leg. He thought that the swelling and bruising on his leg probably made it weaker and when Puyol kicked it the result was a break.
The boss did say though that the medical opinion was that he was able to play and the player himself said he was able to play too. Cesc has said today that he felt no pain until after he scored his penalty and that the adrenalin must have been flowing.
That's exactly what I said yesterday in my blog, and interestingly he did say the break was in the exact same spot as the kick he got at Birmingham last week. He did say that he is gutted to miss the rest of the season but he hopes to be able to play in the Champions league final if we can make it to that final.
Finally for today we have to get a win to get back on track regardless of the outcome of the "Manure" v Chelsea game beforehand.
We cannot allow the tactics of Birmingham to ruin another season for us and it would be an absolute shame if things went wrong this weekend and our season was over by Tuesday night.
Don't forget the next game after Barcelona is the Spuds eight days later and we could well see RVP on the bench that night. That's it for today.
Here's the goals from Wednesday night.
See You Tomorrow.
