Giants Sign Reinier Roibal

The Giants just signed 20 year old Cuban right-hander Reinier Roibal.  He throws in the mid-90’s and is regarded as top Cuban pitching prospect.  Here is a post from Cuban Ball Players which includes a scouting report for Roibal.  No word yet on what the Giants paid to sign him.

In unrelated news, the Rangers just claimed Ryan Garko off waivers.  I had thought Garko would slip through waivers because no one this late in the Spring would want to assume the guaranteed $550,000 the Mariners gave him this off-season.

However, the Rangers have been looking for a right-handed hitting 1Bman, and Garko is a cheaper option than sending a prospect to the Red Sox for Mike Lowell and $ 9 or 10 million of the remaining $12 million on Lowell’s contract.  Claiming Garko almost certainly means that the possibility of the Rangers acquiring Lowell is nil, at least during the first two months of the 2010 season.
