Thomas is one of two elite free safeties in this draft class (Eric Berry). He should start for the Dolphins from day one and improve the secondary drastically. We have always been missing that ballhawk on our defense that can make big plays. Thomas is a great fit as a center fielder in Mike Nolan's defense and is a solid tackler. This pick makes the most sense to me because in today's game you need a free safety who can make plays and force turnovers, Thomas should do that much better than Gerbil Wilson.
Hughes has a great motor and a real nack for getting to the quarterback. He has shown solid stand up skills and is projected as more of an outside linebacker in a 3-4 defense at the next level. That is a perfect fit for Miami considering we lost both of our starting outside linebackers from last year.
Ok so we spend the first two picks on defense, so now we need to get a weapon for Chad Henne and our offense. Pitta is a premier receiving TE with great hands, and is compared to Dallas Clark. This is a great value pick in the third round, Pitta has potential to be a big contributor as a rookie.
First round talent but he quit the team before the second half of 2009, so he went well down the draft boards. When he did play he was very production in a below average Syracuse offense. Could be a real steal in the mid-rounds and the Phins might get their receiver they've been looking for.
We should acquire a 4th round pick for Justin Smiley, who will be traded. Showed great strength as he benched 225 lbs. 44 times at the combine. Good potential as a run stuffing nose tackle at the next level. Should be the best talent available at his position in the later rounds. The Dolphins definitely need more depth at nose tackle, but i think between him and Paul Solai they will get the job done until Ferg comes back.
