Ahhhhhhhh America home of the free, land of the brave and place where we love our heroes and hate villains. Sports has always had its share of heroes and villains, but as a sports fan, it’s always more fun to cheer against the teams we despise. There is an old saying: I love my team and any team who plays___.
This list is a salute the teams we despise and love to hate.
The Trojans are kinda of a new addition to the list. Why is USC hated so much? Overexposure. The media loves them so much it’s sickening; ESPN even name USC the Team of the Decade BEFORE the decade was even over. SC is also hated because it’s perceived by many as untouchable when it comes to them breaking the rules, and to add insult to injury they just hired Lane Kiffin; oh joy.
Even as a devoted SEC fan, I found myself rooting against the Cats’ in the NCAA Tournament. Why is UK hated so much? It use to be because they won so much, now it’s because of John Calipari. Calipari is seen by many as the evil genius who cheated his way through Memphis and now is about to do the same at Kentucky; correction he was.
Welcome back to the list Alabama! Talk to almost any fan of the SEC and to a man, most of them cannot stand the Crimson Tide. Why is the Tide hated so much? Tide fans and Nick Saban. Crimson Tide fans have always been accused of being obnoxious and arrogant and their arrogance for some has been worse since the hiring of Saban. Saban is not exactly media friendly and the media still hasn’t forgiven him for in their words “lying” about leaving the Dolphins for Alabama. LSU fans haven’t forgiven or forgotten either.
Another new addition to the list. Why are the Gators hated so much? Isn’t it obvious? Urban Meyer and Tim Tebow. Their whole father/son relationship is enough to make anyone gag. Meyer helped his status on this list by cussing out a reporter last week who had the nerve to report that one of his wide receivers made an unflattering comment about Tebow or at least that’s what Meyer thought. He later apologized. Tebow took it in stride as he usually does, but it was reported recently that he was told to "shut the beep up!" when he wanted to pray before his Wonderlic test.
Growing up as a kid, I hated the Boston Celtics. I hated Larry Bird, Kevin McHale, the Boston Garden and Red Auerbach. If you were a fan of the LA Lakers like I was, you hated the Celtics for those reasons and more; not to mention they won A LOT back in the day and won a lot of their championships at the expense of the Lakers.
And if you were a Celtics fan, you hated the Lakers. The Lakers stood for glamour, movie stars, Showtime, Pat Riley, and of course Magic. For Celtic fans, they were the blue collar guys; the Lakers were the glamour boys of the West Coast and to this day they still are. Kobe, Pau, Lamar, and Phil Jackson are like the Laker teams of the 1980’s.
Dick Vitale asked on the Mike and Mike show this morning why the public hates the Duke Blue Devils; basically Dickie V because they win too damn much and because of you. If there is ONE good reason to hate the Duke Blue Devils, it’s the way Dick Vitale kisses their behinds every chance he gets. The Dukies as he likes to call them, never do wrong in his eyes and he has an obvious bias towards them which makes fans hate them more. Going to the Final Four isn’t bad enough, now we have to hear Vitale’s mouth all week about how good Duke is.
When it comes to the Cowboys, there is no in between; either you love them or hate them. I think a lot of the hate for the Cowboys comes from them labeling themselves America’s Team which ticked off the other teams in the NFL and their fans. Not to mention winning, Cowboy fans, and the arrogance of their owner, players, and sometimes their coaches. It’s true there are a lot of Cowboy fans out there; it’s equally true there are a lot of Cowboy haters too.
This was a hard decision to make because a lot of people hate the Yankees. The main reason they are hated: George Steinbrenner. Winning doesn’t bother people as much as the fact that Steinbrenner and now his sons can buy championships. They can open the check book to any super star out there and say: How much do you want? Nothing makes fans more upset then rich owners who are able to throw their money at athletes.
The good ole Fighting Irish; you know they had to be number one. Why do we hate Notre Dame? Let us count the ways: Knute Rockne, Touchdown Jesus, the fight song, their colors, that ugly leprechaun, their contract with NBC, Regis Philbin, Lou Holtz, winning championships, the Gipper speech shall I go on? Well, you get the picture.
