The Nationals claimed cather Chris Coste on waivers Monday from the New York Mets, who had little need for him. With Rod Barajas the starting catcher and Henry Blanco the backup. the Mets signed Coste, 37 to a one-year deal in December. He was expected to start the season on the bench at Triple-A Buffalo, where he could also serve as a mentor to top catching prospect Josh Thole. Now, it appears Omir Santos will be Thole's backup in Buffalo. Mets could have trade Coste instead putting him on waivers.
