Los Angeles Dodgers Five Biggest Strengths Heading into Opening Day 2010

The Los Angeles Dodgers certainly have weapons on their roster and thus far this spring, those weapons have been on display.

The Dodgers arsenal gives them an edge entering the regular season and a foundation to campaign for a playoff spot. Five essential strengths have to be met in order for a major league club to succeed:

Effective pitching is key. Pitching that keeps the other team from scoring provides an easy-street to wins.

A productive 3-4-5 in the lineup to drive in runs ensures plenty of offense to back up effective pitching.

DEFENSE. Sound mechanics in the infield and swift, fast-reacting outfielders pick up a pitcher in the later innings and maintain momentum.

A well-developed farm system provides insurance for the future and the present. Young talent in the minors could turn in to stars in the majors down the road. Devastating injuries at the major league level are minor issues with strong minor league talent to step in.

Finally, a seasoned coaching staff with decision-making skills and valuable insights provide a competitive edge.

With the majority of the pieces to the puzzle returning for the Dodgers, the team looks to be poised for a return to the playoffs.

A solid mix of experienced veterans and young talent is essential to any ballclub's sustainability, and it appears the Dodgers have those key elements, as long as they stay healthy.
