Ryan Howard knows what the Phillies expect from him—go deep, drive in runs, minimize strikeouts.
So far this year, he has done two of those three tasks.
But on Thursday afternoon, he got all three done.
On Wednesday night on ESPN, Howard hit a home run in the 8th that led the Phils to a 4-2 win over the Cardinals. Thursday was a completely different story. He went deep twice (he now has 27 homers, leading the majors) and has 83 RBI. His anemic average is .234 and he has still struck out over 100 times.
In the past few days, he has limited the strikeouts and has been hitting everything—and hitting homers.
Today, Howard's two homers led the Phillies to a 4-1 win. 44-year-old starting pitcher Jamie Moyer quieted the Cardinals' bats, pitching seven innings and allowing just one run. He improved his record to 8-6 and his ERA is 3.95.
Howard entered Wednesday tied with Chase Utley for the home run lead with 24. Utley hasn't hit one in the Cardinals series, and Howard has three in two games.
J.C. Romero got his first save of the season, as Brad Lidge didn't appear because of a relatively safe three-run lead against the Cardinals—who haven't been hitting much lately.

Looper made two awful pitches, and got shelled. Howard is simply too good to give it to him in the bread basket.
