Should The San Francisco 49ers Sign Adam "Pacman" Jones?

BobContributor IIMarch 19, 2010

Pacman Jones will hold a private workout Friday.  The four teams expected to attend are the Saints, Lions, Jaguars, and 49ers.  The 49ers reportedly held a private meeting with Pacman last week.

Jones is unquestionably talented, but his off-the-field issues have overshadowed what he has accomplished on the field.  He showed with Tennessee that he had excellent punt return skills and better than average kick return skills.  Jones cover skills are promising in the time that he has played.

The problem with Pacman is his character.  Has he matured enough to not be a distraction for a team willing to take a chance on him?

The 49ers are looking at adding a return man either in free agency or in the draft.  In the case of Jones he doesn't quite have the size the 49ers would like in their cornerbacks, but he would probably be used as their return man and could play defensively as their nickel corner.

Pacman is still young, he will turn 27 on Sept. 30.  The 49ers have the Veterans in the locker room to keep Jones in check.  Singletary is the type of coach who wouldn't put up with any of Pacman's detrimental off-the-field actions and might finally be able to motivate him to exceed on the field and off.

If the 49ers can sign him to a one year deal with a second year option on an incentive laden contract then they should take a chance.  This would help with additional secondary depth and provide an answer for their punt and kick returner vacancy.
