Breaking News: Maple Leafs, Frogren Deal Denied By NHL

Derek HarmsworthSenior Writer IJuly 9, 2008

The NHL head offices has rejected the contract deal for the Toronto Maple Leafs and Swedish defenseman Jonas Frogren.

The Toronto Maple Leafs and Jonas Frogren are working with the NHL and the NHLPA on a way to resolve the issues that the NHL has deemed need fixed before a deal can be approved.

Frogren, who is 28 years old and was originally drafted in 1998 by Calgary, signed a standard player contract with the Maple Leafs this afternoon.

The NHL, however, says that Frogren is not eligible for this type of contract and despite his age and experience in Europe must be signed to a standard three year entry level deal.

Frogren's agent Don Meehan says the Maple Leafs and his client will continue to work the NHL and the Players Association in hopes of resolving the issue.

I will have more on this news as I get it.
