2010 NFL Draft: Why Tim Tebow Will Go to the New England Patriots
Bill Belichick usually stands the football world on its proverbial head, whether it is attempting a 4th-and-2 with Peyton Manning pacing on the sidelines or sending Richard Seymour to Oakland for a future first round pick. In the 2010 NFL Draft, he very well could be planning another shock and awe campaign.
He will draft Tim Tebow.
The idea is actually not that preposterous, even though Tebow has been linked to the Panthers, Jaguars, and will be hosting private workouts with the Bills and Seahawks in the coming week.
In the eyes of Patriots brass (notably Belichick), the most important weapon a player can have is leadership and the desire to compete, both qualities that have defined Tebow in college and stand even more prevalent now that Tebow is changing his mechanics in order to impress scouts at the upcoming pro day.
He wants to be a quarterback in the NFL no matter what and of all the coaches in the NFL, Belichick is probably the one who could make that a reality.
This is not to suggest that Tom Brady is going anywhere; he's not. But Tebow would be a dangerous alternative in short down situations when Belichick wants to take a little Vegas gamble and roll the dice. Perhaps with this scenario, Belichick's 2010 version of 4-and-2 would work?
The Facts
Patriots Football Weekly brought the issue up in their notes from February 26. In it they talked about Tebow's strength's, his brains and his mouth, and how those aspects of his game could make "that a fairy tale process" in New England.
Why? This is from Tebow himself:
"In high school they said I couldn’t be a quarterback. I’ve come a long way since then. I’m just excited about all the opportunities and the blessings in my life. I’m just trying to handle it as best I can.
"I want to be a quarterback in the NFL. That’s been my dream since I was six years old. I’m going to do whatever it takes to do that. If I’m on a team that asks me to help the team in another way, of course I’m going to do that. It’s always team first. That’s how it’s always been.
"Sometimes you can’t help the attention but what you can help is your attitude, you can help your work ethic and when you go in there and show that, ‘hey I am putting the team first, I’m going to do whatever it takes to help you guys succeed, to help this organization and, together, we can achieve more."
"If they know that and believe that, then they are going to respect me. And that respect grows into like and that like grows into love and then you get a team that’s bought it, and then you get a team that wins championships.
"I feel like I have a good relationship with Coach [Bill] Belichick," Tebow said. "He was a very close friend of Coach [Urban] Meyer’s so I feel like I knew him in college. He came and spoke to us quite a few times. I got to know him through that and I respect him as a coach and as a person. He just does a great job."
The Reality
If in fact Tebow is taken by the Pats in the draft he is not going to be expected to be an every down quarterback.
As Andy Hart from PFW says, "he will probably be an H-back or a Jack-of-All-Trades." I find that to be interesting, and with Brady, a quarterback who works about 76 percent of his passes from the shotgun formation, he would have an excellent mentor.
The Conclusion
It's an intriguing possibility: The arguably best college player going to the arguably best coached team. Tebow will have his best shot of succeeding in the Patriots organization, if in fact he's still around then.
The hype that he's created with his "tweaking" of his throwing motion might make a team scraping for fans take him sooner.
