Tennessee Football: Rocky Top Roundup Message Board, July 8

Michael ShibleySenior Analyst IJuly 8, 2008

Hope everyone had a great Independence Day! Now it's time for another installment of the Rocky Top Roundup.

There was big news out of Knoxville last week as Tennessee Head Football Coach Phillip Fulmer and Head Basketball Coach Bruce Pearl both got contract extensions through the 2014 season.

Fulmer's new deal will average $3 million through the seven-year term of the contract. Included in the contract are some automatic bonuses for achieving certain goals: $500,000 for winning an SEC Championship and a $1 million raise for winning a BCS Championship. Also in the deal is a $1 million longevity bonus to be paid in 2012, which would be Fulmer's 20th season as head coach.

The question for this week is: What do you think of Coach Phillip Fulmer's new contract?

I think he deserves the raise for his loyalty to the University of Tennessee and his consistent winning. Aside the bad year in 2005, Fulmer has always fielded winning teams and has kept Tennessee a big-time college football program.

Also, if you look at the numbers, the contract is still a bargain.  Even with a $350,000 raise, Fulmer will only be the seventh highest paid coach in the SEC during the 2008 season.

I also think this deal is a sign that Tennessee Athletic Director Mike Hamilton is very confident in his football coach despite all of the fan and media discontent in Knoxville after blowout losses to Florida and Alabama.

That kind of confidence from your Athletic Director has to make Coach Fulmer feel very safe on Rocky Top.

Now I want to know what all Tennessee and SEC fans think.  Either leave a comment or write your own article.
