It’s fitting that I heard the news via text message from Chris:
Dukes just blew out his knee.
Turns out it’s a torn meniscus and partially torn patella tendon, which puts him on the shelf ’til mid-August and maybe beyond. It’s a damn shame, really, because the kid was having a dream 2008 after a nightmare ‘07. Manager Acta called Dukes the team’s best player, and he had been, posting a .900-plus OPS since June 1. Tim Redding even had this to say:
It’s definitely a blow. We’ve had enough injuries already for any team in a whole season, let alone in the first three months. And to see a kid go down who is passionate about winning and lays it out on the line day in and day out, you go home, pray and hope he’s doing all right.
Yessir, he had been turning it around. Now, though, the spiraling sadness of the Nats’ season continues as slap-hitting, no-walking Christian Guzman is batting in Dukes’ vacated No. 3 slot.
/misses Elijah already, dawg
