Former Maple Leaf Joe Nieuwendyk is expected to meet with Leaf GM Cliff Fletcher this week to discuss joining the club's management group.
Fletcher tried to lure in the three-time Stanley Cup winner to the big T.O from Florida before but was unsuccessful due to the contract Nieuwendyk was under as an advisor. That deal officially ended on June 30, and Nieuwendyk was free to walk away.
The native of Oshawa, Ontario was drafted in 1985 by the Flames—whose GM at the time happened to be Fletcher. Nieuwendyk was a big part in the first and only Stanley Cup won by the Flames organization
The Leafs are hoping Nieuwendyk's experiance and winning reputation will follow him to Toronto and turn a rebuilding Maple Leaf franchise around.
