WWE: Five Wrestlers That Should Not Be Pushed or Given A World Title
"Controversy Creates Cash"...the legendary words of Eric Bischoff.
This will probably be the most controversial article I've written in my so far brief, but enjoyable, time contributing to the Bleacher Report community. I am not writing this to put any wrestler or any fan of those wrestlers down.
I am writing this because I sincerely believe that it would be bad for the WWE if any of these wrestlers had a world title around their waist.
5. Drew McIntyre
Vince McMahon's "personal signing," Drew was given the IC belt way too quickly. He has look of a main eventer and the backing of both Triple H and Shawn Michaels.
The problem is, he has no charisma and doesn't draw much heat from the fans. I can't see him as a successful face, and I don't think he'll make a great heel, either.
4. Matt Hardy
Yes, he was given the ECW title.
But it was not for nothing that he was given the championship that most people didn't even recognize as a world title.
He has a few decent moves, but he never was as exciting as his brother, and he is awkward at best on the mic.
Remember his worked shoot promo on Edge and Lita after coming back to the WWE? The crowd was silent.
I was a big fan of the Hardyz when I was younger, but the truth is Matt is out of shape and destined to be in makeshift tag-team pairings for the rest of his career (e.g. R-Truth, Khali).
3. Jack Swagger
Many people thought it should have been "The All American-American" and not Sheamus to beat Cena for the belt.
No way, Sheamus was the right choice.
Sheamus has a unique look, a gimmick, and generates interest as a heel.
It is true that Jack Swagger is a talented wrestler with size and technical ability.
The problem is that between his manner of speech and general demeanor, he comes off as a complete joke of a character.
Fans can't take a guy who jumps around like a gorilla and has a bad lisp seriously as a world champion.
Rumor also has it that he's not a very dedicated worker and has no passion for the business. This is a guy who you want doing skits with Santino and Hornswoggle, not representing the WWE as a world champion.
2. John Morrison
Of the five wrestlers I'm writing about, this is the only one I could change my mind about.
But right now, John Morrison should not be world champion. Yes he is young, has "the look," and is great in the ring.
The problem is the very thing that drew people to him in the first place: the comparisons to Shawn Michaels.
If he becomes a world champion, he will be judged by the standard of The Heartbreak Kid.
John Morrison is no Shawn Michaels. He sounds nervous on the mic, he doesn't have the passion and emotion of Michaels. He doesn't connect to the fans like Michaels.
If you're going to be an HBK-clone, you better be able to do at least some of the things HBK does.
Morrison could be a legitimate world champion in the future, but he needs to fine-tune his gimmick and needs tons of work on the mic.
Right now, his former partner, "The Miz," is be a much better choice to be given the top belt.
1. Shelton Benjamin
Shelton Benjamin is not world champion material, and I don't think he ever will be.
He is an amazing athlete and.... an amazing athlete and... an amazing athlete.
That's it.
I love to watch his matches, but Shelton Benjamin as a world champion would be a disaster.
With his high-flying moveset, he is always one misstep away from being out for six months. Even if he doesn't get a severe injury, the wear and tear on Shelton's body will add up at a very young age.
He is not a good long-term investment for the WWE. Remember what happened to the WWE's last daredevil champion?
He became a drug addict and now faces jail time. Jeff Hardy at least connected with the fans in a way that Shelton doesn't. His rebellious "live for the moment" persona was very popular among young fans, especially teenagers.
Shelton's "Gold Standard" gimmick is weak and not fitting of being the top guy in the industry.
If he changed his persona, he would need to improve his mic skills 100-fold. A world champion cannot have his mama as his mouthpiece.
Remember that this is sports entertainment. John Morrison could improve and eventually become a world champion.
Shelton, as talented as he is, does not seem to have any ability as a sports entertainer. Any show with him holding the top title would see ratings plummet within two weeks.
What makes a world champion?
A world champion needs to have athletic ability, charisma, mic skills, passion for the industry, and a connection with the fans.
I hope I didn't offend anyone by insulting their favorite wrestler. All five of these guys are fun to watch and are deserving of their fans.
But with the exception of John Morrison (if he changes and improves in some areas), they are not worthy of representing their brand with the World Heavyweight or WWE Championship.
