These are three trades that the Dallas Mavericks could make if they wanted to "pull a Boston" and totally reload.
Trade One: Trade Jason Kidd and $3 million to Denver for Allen Iverson. This trade isn't so much about getting better as it is about a change of scenery. So far, Kidd hasn't quite shown that he fits in the Dallas system. Keep in mind, however, that the addition of Rick Carlisle could change that.
Trade Two: Trade Josh Howard to Sacramento for Ron Artest and a second round draft pick. The Mavs' defense has been a weakness as of late, and Ron Artest is one of the premier defensive players in the league. He wants out of Sacramento and the Mavs might be looking to trade Josh Howard due to his marijuana remarks.
Trade Three: Trade Brandon Bass, Erick Dampier, and two first round draft picks to Toronto for Chris Bosh. This is the big one. The Mavs are desperate for a good big man and Chris Bosh can play both power forward and center. He would complete a starting five that could rival the best in the league.
Starting Lineup
C—Chris Bosh
PF—Dirk Nowitzki
SF—Ron Artest
SG—Jason Terry
PG—Allen Iverson

Now the Denver trade is interesting because both guys are in the last year of their deals. Kidd is definitely a more natural point guard but the Denver fans would go nuts and the team could definitely do better for AI than a washed up Kidd.
The Artest for Howard trade actually makes a lot of sense because Artest is in his final year and Cuban is probably the only owner in the NBA that would commit more than three years to Artest. Howard would be a nice addition to a team that will probably have difficulty luring free agents to Sacramento.
The third deal is outright retarded. Why the hell would the Raptors make that trade? Why don't you trade Eddie Jones and Jerry Stackhouse for Kevin Garnett too? Maybe sign-and-trade Devean George for Dwyane Wade while you're at it.

"Maybe sign-and-trade Devean George for Dwyane Wade while you're at it."
Quite possibly the funniest comment I've ever read on B/R. Well played.

I am with Andrew on this one. Denver wouldn't want Kidd over Iverson and Toronto wouldn't take "crap" for Bosh.
The Artest for Howard trade might be a plausible scenario in that Artest makes $8.5 mil and Howard makes roughly $10. And, Sac would be getting rid of a headache to get a developing, but already good player. Dallas gets a guy with a win-now attitude. The down-side for Dallas is that they'd have to work out an extension beforehand, since Artest in his "crazy ways" could end up just opting out after 2008-2009 and joining someone like the Lakers or whoever else is close to winning a championship.

ok, fine. scratch the Bosh trade. How about this one: Jerry Stackhouse for Ben Wallace, straight up. I know Big Ben's value has fallen. That would give the Mavs both championship experience and a decent center.

For starters, Stackhouse makes $7 million and Wallace makes $15 million so the Mavs would have to include about another $7 million in the deal. Nobody wants the shitty contracts of Jason Terry or Dampier because they run past the 2010 off-season so I don't see either team wanting to make this deal. Sure the Mavs would love to get rid of either of those contracts but why would the Mavs take on a shitty contract that would prevent them from adding pieces around LeBron if he decides to stay in 2010?
The Mavs suck. There isn't a trade or two that would make them contenders any time soon. Dirk just turned 30 last month. Considering they won't have cap space for another two years, they may want to explore selling high while they can. Unless they can trade Kidd's expiring deal to a team that really thinks they can make a run at LeBron then they'll probably miss the playoffs next year. If the Clippers retain Elton Brand then they, along with the Blazers, are already a better team than Dallas on paper.
The Lakers, Spurs, Hornets and Jazz are the only playoff locks for next season. Phoenix, Houston, Portland, Denver, Dallas and the Clips will all be fighting it out for the four remaining playoff seeds.
Who might be cleaning house to make a run at LeBron? How about the Knicks? Would you take Eddy Curry, David Lee and either Jamal Crawford or Quentin Richardson? How about Zach Randolph and Jared Jeffries?
We're assuming that Cuban realizes he has no shot at getting LeBron. Don't forget that Dirk can opt-out the same summer and he'll want a new six-year deal. Even if he doesn't they've still got $45 million committed to just Dirk, Terry and Dampier and the cap will probably be somewhere around $65 million. Maybe they'll give $20 million to LeBron and fill the roster out with NBDL scrubs. If they exercise the $11 million team option on Howard's contract for that season they'll have four players making $56 million of their $65 million cap.
Other than the Knicks, the Mavs are in the worst financial shape of any team in the NBA. Some teams suck but will have plenty of cap space and a nice mix of young players to build around. Some teams suck but just might be a one or two players away from competing with the ability to trade one or two of the players in exchange.
The Mavs are neither. They have nothing anybody wants (besides Dirk) and no salary cap relief until 2011-12.
If the Mavs don't trade Kidd before the end of the season you better pray they don't re-sign him. He's probably going to want at least a two-year deal for at least $10 a year.
You're right in thinking they need a center. But they're about to bring back Diop at an overpriced $6 million a year without having to give up Stackhouse and he's better than Wallace at this stage.

Ericka Dampier, Bass & 2 first round picks for Chris Bosh? Bosh is a young franchise player who is a lock for 20/10 and is only getting better. Kidd for Iverson? Kidd has maybe one more good year left while AI will be very good for at least the next 3-4 years. Finally, the Kings will never make a trade with Dallas, who is supossedly one of their main rivals.

toronto will not just hand the mavs Bosh for completely worthless players.. if the mavs want to give up dirk than maybe you're talking

People are coming down hard and you and I wont do that. Mainly because I was with you on the first two deals. I didn't think they'd give the Mavs the pieces to win a championship, but they at least made some sense. The third one was pretty ridiculous though. A.) It doesnt matter if you offer up Howard and Kidd and 2 first round draft picks, the Raptors aren't trading Chris Bosh. They just added Jermaine Oneal, they aren't sellers, they want to win now. Bosh is tradeable in only a handful of scenarios, and none involve Brandon Bass as the centerpiece. B.) its just not a plausible deal.
I also don't see Allen Iverson being a better fit for the team than Jason Kidd or being an upgrade. Dallas doesn't need a selfish scoring guard. Kidd will make this system better, its just going to take the summer.
And Ron Artest, while he could make sense in Dallas, doesn't measure up to Howard in my opinion. But thats only a matter of opinion. But I just don't put Artest up to the level of any of the big 3 in Boston. Now, if you said Josh Howard for Artest and Spencer Hawes, that could fill two needs for Dallas and make them better all-around.
If youre looking for a new direction in Dallas at point guard, and I personally wouldnt be, it seems like Detriot is taking offers for Billups. That could be another scenario.

I think the Toronto trade would work if Toronto had the Memphis Grizzlies Front Office

you got to be kidding me. why in the WORLD would toronto trade Chris Bosh for Brandon Bass, Erick Dampier, and two first round draft picks. THIS IS THE BIG ONE? BIG WHAT?????

The dallas mavs mortgage their future buy paying so much to get jason kidd. It's a shame they can't do a control-z
3 months ago
theres no way toronto or denver would go with this. why would toronto want eric Dampier, nobody wants him. Have you checked the cap on the Bosh one? Dampier is way overpaid

I have a trade scenario for all. Four teams.
Chicago Get:
Nowitzki & Blount
Miami Get:
Hinrich, Nocioni, Stackhouse & Simmons
Detroit Get:
Marion, Noah & Kidd
Dallas Get:
Wallace, Thomas, Hamilton & Billups
The contract numbers match.
I believe it makes Chicago, Miami and Dallas better teams now - and gives Detroit a half decent line-up for 08-09 that will shed $35-$40 Million off next years cap - as well as a hall-of-fame point guard to help develop Stuckey!
Thoughts? Suggestions?
Anyone know of better &/or more appropriate forums to air these kinds of things?
