Chelsea's Fateful Five: Factors That Could Make or Break the Blues' EPL Season
Last weekend's horrific 4-2 loss to Manchester City has thrown Chelsea, as well as all their supporters, into a tense season-end journey.
While the Blues' closest title rival, the Red Devils, are just one point behind, the Gunners are three points adrift of the top.
In this article we will look into what five factors could possibly make or break Chelsea's title hopes.
Drogba's Goal Scoring Prowess
The Blues' talismanic Ivorian striker has been in top class form this season and is in run for the Golden Boot.
He has already scored 19 goals in 23 matches and is just four goals behind the leading goal scorer Wayne Rooney.
He needs to find the nets with his strikes till the end of the season to keep title hopes alive for Chelsea.
He missed out on a number of chances against Manchester City, and such misses too often may prove to be costly for Chelsea.
Carlo Ancelotti's Tactics
The Italian manager has a lot of responsibility. He has to keep the morale high for his team and see that the team gets back its confidence as early as possible.
The two successive defeats must have surely dealt a morale blow to the Blues. It's up to him to restore that winning confidence.
He also needs to make correct strategies at correct times, unlike making Florent Malouda play as a left back against a team like Inter.
He should try use the other players who are experienced in those places. Now is not the correct time to experiment, and he should know that more than anybody.
A wrong or correct strategy may determine silverware for Chelsea or another year of drought.
Cech's Hopeful Speedy Recovery
The picture was the worst thing to happen to the Blues, and Petr Cech's face reflects the mood in light of his injury.
The Czech shot stopper has been instrumental in Chelsea's class performance this season. Chelsea has conceded the second lowest goal total among the top three teams vying for the title. This has been possible due to the Blues' 6'5" goalkeeper's efforts.
He is the mainstay of Chelsea's defense.
His unfortunate injury has thrown Chelsea's defense in tatters, as his replacement Henrique Hialrio has been "hilarious," which is all the more reason for Chelsea's worries.
Everyone involved with the Blues will be hoping for his speedy recovery, because, in the end, Cech's injury may turn out to be the Blues' only reason for losing out on the top honors.
John Terry's Resurrection
The inspirational captain of the Blues has been in the news of late for all the wrong reasons.
His alleged affair with his former teammate and England colleague Wayne Bridge's "EX-WIFE" has got a lot of unwanted publicity.
The negative criticism and foul-mouthing faced by the axed England captain from press, players (especially of ManC), and supporters have caused a dip in his form. His increasing number of mistakes is definitely worrying for the Blues, mostly because he is the mainstay of the Blues' defense.
Terry needs to keep these things out of his mind and do what he does best: Play the game.
The earlier he makes himself immune to the present condition, the better it will be for Chelsea's title hopes.
The Blues need to hope for a resurrection in form for their inspiring and motivational captain as early as possible.
What else can luck be more than this?
Nemanja Vidic pulls down Gabriel Agbonlahor inside the penalty box and the referee does not even book him; thereon Manchester United goes on to win the Carling Cup final against Aston Villa.
As Fergie has admitted to being lucky, Chelsea needs all of their luck also. Critical injury to two important players nearing the close of the season can be attributed to their luck, or rather bad luck.
Chelsea will need some good luck to survive the season without more injuries and a hopeful speedy recovery of their players.
As for the knockout tournaments, along with luck Chelsea also need some good refereeing, as the example set out in last year's Champions League loss to Barca in the semifinals proves.
