With the season coming to a close and people looking forward to postseason play who were our stars of the 2009 -2010 season in the Southeastern Conference.
There were many outstanding players in the conference this year, but only five can make the cut as 1st team All SEC. This has been a year of new face and battle tested veterans going head to head on some of the biggest national stages that we have seen as a conference in a few years.
This year the has been a good year for the SEC and one that is hopefully going to see better results in the NCAA tournament then last year. Kentucky the Flagship Basketball school of the SEC is back on track. Kentucky being good makes the conference better and more competitive (well most of the time).
The SEC this year has been dominated by the Eastern division who has won most of its games against the west. The East has also had the No. 1 team in the nation with at least one other team ranked each week of the season.
This years all SEC team will be dominate by the Wildcats who will get their trio of stars onto the team. You will also see the return of players from last seasons team who just cannot be mentioned as anything less then one of the best at each of their respective positions nationally.
A final not on this list, I think it is interesting that the five I picked here in almost certainty will not be returning. It is such an outside chance that i do not see it happening. So that leaves us with the question of who will carry the torch of SEC stars next year. I think the player picked as the sixth man will be that player. He can carry his team to an extent, and with another year of experience he will turn into one of the dominate SEC players.
Guard Devan Downey
Devan "Wildcat Killer" Downey has put together one of the best senior season in South Carolina history. This season he is averaging 22.5 points a game, 3.6 assists, while shooting 33 percent from behind the arc.
He had his moment of the season on Jan. 26 when he continued his record of taking down Kentucky. When playing the No. 1 Wildcats he dropped 31 points, played his way into the nations eyes, and a possible SEC player of the year. He is one of best SEC guards in the past 10 years.
Guard John Wall
John Wall the No.1 recruit in the nation has done more then just live up to the high school hype. He is leader of this team and can do things not many people can do with a basketball in their hand.
Wall is the kind of player that takes over a game and imposes his will on defenders. He is a player that refuses to lose. Wall started the season red hot and has cooled down a little bit but is always there when his team needs him. He heads into the last two games averaging 16.8 points and 6.2 assists a game. Wall is the best player on the best team in the conference.
Forward DeMarcus Cousins
DeMarcus Cousins the other highly-touted freshman at Kentucky has turned out to be a dominate player. Some people say the most dominate big man in the country. In the words of Dick Vitale "He's a beast."
It took a little while for Cousins to blossom. But once he got started, there was no looking back. He has been tearing up some of the best big men in the country. Cousins is averaging a double double at 16 points and 10 rebounds. He is one of a hand full of great inside talent this year.
Center Jarvis Varnado
Jarvis Varnado has been a main stay in the SEC, and the Bulldog frontcourt for the last four years. He's is the NCAA's all-time shot block leader on his way passing the likes of Tim Duncan, right now he sits at a career 537 blocks.
This season, he has been just as solid also averaging a double-double at 13 ppg and 10 rpg. Couple that with almost five blocks a game, and you have best shotblocking center in college basketball history.
Forward Patrick Patterson
Patrick Patterson is a player who came back to win a championship, and is also the third returning 1st teamer with Downey and Varnado. Patterson has been the rock of this team and it may not be super visible but he has held this team together when Wall and Cousins have played poorly.
His numbers have taken a hit at 14 ppg, but he has never played in the NCAA tournament and wants to win. He will go down as a great player who led his school through the dark times to its current glory.
Sixth Man Courtney Fortson
Fortson has not gotten much press because he is not on a great team, but he may be the second best player in the west.
He was suspended for 15 games but since his return he has torn things up for the Razorbacks. He has made this team much better. At 18 points and 6.1 assists a game this season, he will be a force in the future for the Razorbacks.
