NHL, Toronto Maple Leafs, Breaking News

The Toronto Maple Leafs announced today that they have resigned Restricted Free Agent center Matt Stajan to a two year deal.

The Missisauga, Ontario native will make $3.5 million dollars total or $1.75 annually.

Stajan scored 16 goals and added 17 assists last season for the Maple Leafs while appearing in all 82 games.

I will have more on this tonight in Maple Leafs' Notes.

  1. Good to see. $1.75 isn't bad, and I like the term. This is the make-or-break contract for Stajan.

I've always believed he has some untapped offensive ability, so let's hope that starts to show if he gets more minutes.

  2. i like this deal. its not huge, but he has some great ability that he has not been able to show off

  3. 16 goals for 20 minutes a game, at least the Leafs Fingered out that he wasn't worth 3.5 million a year because he has played more than 100 NHL games......

  4. Kyle, when has Matt Stajan ever played 20 minutes a game for more than a four or five game stretch?

  5. When Sundin went down at the end of the season, Stajan was one of the guys who picked up the slack. Also he has been praised for how hard he works in the off season, and all year long. He is a quality player (whether or not he manages to turn into a top 6 forward)

  6. stajan seems like a good dressing room guy. defensively conscious and uses his body pretty well, too. I'm hoping wilson can make him (and Steen for that matter) a little meaner.

  7. Agreed Mark. I don't understand why so many people dump on Stajan. No, he's not a flashy guy, but he does everything relatively well. If he can work on his consistency he will be a big part of the team's future.

  8. Ive noticed a lot of people say he is defensively conscious but he was -11. Did I miss something?

    1. there's a good reason for this - he often played a checking role against the other teams 1st or 2nd line. unfortunately that often results in a negative +/-. Mayers is -19 and even Staal in Pittsburgh was -5 in a similar role.

compare that to Tucker who was not used in any kind of defensive role, and he was -8.

  9. Bad team Scott? lol, after all I think if you include last season's stats Jeff Finger is our best plus minus player.

It's time I let you Josh, and anyone else reading in on a little secret. I am a huge Matt Stajan fan. I would almost consider him my favourite NHL player.

I don't know if he will ever put up big numbers, but he is a guy I think the Leafs can count on. He's solid defensively, gives the team secondary scoring (which is so important) and is a locker room guy. He is mature beyond his years, and I think it's great the Maple Leafs re upped him.

I also have a signed Matt Stajan stick on my wall. Seriously, ever since he scored on that breakaway in his first game against the Sens, I've been hooked.

    1. I was a big Alyn McCauley fan. Never had a stick of his on my wall though. Would love for that to be worth big money in a few years!

  10. I was just curious, thanks for the reply Mark. They don't play too many Leaf's games down here, hell, I'm lucky to get a Caps game.
