Antrel Rolle will be released by the Arizona Cardinals in the upcoming week, as reported by ESPN (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=4954227).  When I heard about this recant news one thing sprang to my head. That thing was that the Jets should sign him right away. Rolle could play safety or his original position which was cornerback. The Jets can go in to two different directions if they jump on the opportunity and sign this former first round pick.

Scenario 1- Keep Antrel Rolle at free safety. He was an all-star reserve this year so obviously he has talent. I could see him being a ball hawking safety in a Rex Ryan defense a lot like Ed Reed. I’m not saying that he is going to go and win a defensive MVP but I feel he would be a slight upgrade over Kerry Rhodes at the safety position. Since they now would have Antrel to play free safety it opens the possibility of trading Rhodes. They should try to trade Rhodes for maybe a 3rd round draft pick or perhaps for a cornerback think Antonio Cromartie or a pass rushing DE/OLB.  By signing Rolle the Jets do two things; first they improve at safety and secondly they can trade Kerry Rhodes and improve themselves at cornerback or DE/OLB.

Scenario 2- Move Antrel Rolle back to cornerback. He was drafted in the first round out of the University of Miami as a cornerback and played that position for his fist three years in the NFL. Since they would be moving him to cornerback it would let them keep Rhodes at safety.  However if Rhodes was to fall out of flavor with the Jets coaching staff they could easily bench Rhodes and put Rolle at that safety spot. I like this scenario better because it has Rolle fill two holes, the first being a play-making cornerback opposite Darelle Revis and two provides more depth at the safety position.

I hope the Jets go after and sign Antrel Rolle as I feel he would be a great addition to the already dominate gang green defense. Leave comments about what you think about these two scenarios and whatever else comes to mind.
