Five Keys to the Duke Blue Devils Advancing to the Final Four
Coach Mike Krzyzewski’s Blue Devils are looking damn good right about now, and there’s no better time to be hot than late-February and early-March.
With that in mind, it’s time to take a look at five keys (or, to put it in K-terms, the Blue Devils’ 2010 “fist”) to Duke advancing to the Final Four this year…
1. Hitting Free Throws
This may seem like a given, but Coach K’s squad has really struggled from the charity stripe this season.
And junior Nolan Smith and his Duke-blue teammates can and must return to their team’s historical free throw clutch shooting roots if they want to make a Final Four run in 2010.
2. Out-Rebounding Opponents
Brian Zoubek, Lance Thomas and the Duke big men will be a key to the Blue Devils Final Four run.
That also means guys like Mason and Miles Plumlee stepping up and contributing for Coach K’s team, along with extreme hustle and smart play under the glass for the rest of the team.
3. Seniors Stepping Up
Senior leadership will be vital to this season’s Duke team, led by Jon Scheyer.
Both Thomas and Zoubek are also seniors for the Blue Devils this year, and all three of the senior leaders must step up into their role to help push a fairly-young Coach K team from one of 64 teams to the Final Four or further.
4. Focusing on Defense
The Blue Devils must also have a priority focus on defensive efforts, as Thomas and his teammates must step up defensively if Duke hopes to make a 2010 run to the Final Four.
This means anything from taking charges, to blocking shots, to boxing out under the glass, and this will be a near-necessity if the Dukies really want to make a run this season.
5. Clutch Shooting
Smart shooting in close games will also be a clutch part of Duke’s postseason run, led by the trio of juniors Kyle Singler and Smith along with senior Scheyer.
The Blue Devils bench players and others starters will also have to step up to give the team a spark when any of the given trio are having an off-game, and if Coach K’s 2010 team can learn to do so they will absolutely be Final Four bound…
