Is LaDainian Tomlinson a Top 10 All-Time RB?

The San Diego Chargers have parted ways with the face of their franchise, RB LaDainian Tomlinson

The move was anticipated since the end of the season, as Tomlinson had a career-low 730 yards rushing this year and averaged only 3.3 yards per carry. 

The only positive from the season is he did score 12 rushing touchdowns, which was the fifth highest total in the NFL.

His season ended with a dud when he gained only 24 yards on 12 carries in the Chargers' 17-14 playoff loss to the New York Jets.

Tomlinson has been one of the most dominant running backs in terms of statistical performance that the NFL has ever seen. In just nine years he already ranks eighth in career rushing yards (12,490), second in career rushing touchdowns (138), and third in career rushing and receiving touchdowns (153). 

His skills as a receiver are also impressive, as he has 530 career receptions for 3,955 yards and 15 touchdowns. That elevates him to ninth in career yards from scrimmage (16,445).

The only running backs with more yards from scrimmage are Emmitt Smith, Walter Payton, Marshall Faulk, Barry Sanders, Marcus Allen, Curtis Martin and Thurman Thomas. All of those backs are in the Hall of Fame with the exception of Faulk and Martin, who both become eligible for induction next year.

Simply put, from 2002 to 2007, Tomlinson was the most dominant running back in the NFL. He finished in the top three among running backs in fantasy points scored every season during that stretch and was in the top 10 among all positions each season...
