Dan Henderson was recently quoted making excuses for losing to Anderson Silva. He made comments to the extent of: he had a bad weight cut and he wasn't one hundred percent, "I didn't fight my fight", and Silva got lucky.
I love watching Dan fight, and am a huge fan of his. The comments about not being one hundred percent, and "I didn't fight my fight" were just excuses. Everyone makes those after they lose.
Now on to the "Silva got lucky" comment. That was a garbage comment I would expect from no one in the sport.
Yeah, Silva did get lucky in the fact that Henderson made the mistake of giving up his back. Isn't that how it goes when you get submitted. The guy kind of gets lucky that you followed his plan and left yourself open...That's the way I feel about it.
Everyone in the sport now has at least some submission defense. So it's not like he had no clue what could happen from that position.
I could understand Henderson saying something like that to Dana to get a rematch. But why would he say that to an opponent who would quote him later, even if that's the way he felt.
I really would like to see a rematch. I think Henderson could very well beat Silva if they fought again. I also believe Silva could beat him. That's why I thought a rematch should be in the works already.
Henderson had instructional DVD's called the Brazilian Jujitsu killer. He should have known better than to get caught like that. That's what he should have said, "Silva caught me I should have known better."
They do need to fight again.
I mean Henderson left Wandy laying flat last time they fought. Henderson took the fight to Rampage with a dominant first round.
Henderson was also the only fighter in Pride History to hold 2 belts simultaneously. It should be a given that he would have a series of fights against the top pound-for-pound fighter in the world.
If going public with these statements gets a rematch fight by making this a blood feud, I guess you can give Dan props for getting what he wanted. But I feel like it was disrespectful, and I think he at least needs to make another statement retracting his comments.

Making excuses is just part of human nature and everyone does it even if they don't voice it out loud and get called on it later; it just happens.
There should, and probably will be another fight, but the outcome could be the same.

Oh I agree with the whole amking excuses part, but I think the whole coming out and saying Silva just got lucky was really uncalled for. That is something one professional shouldn't say about another. I am really excited for a rematch. It could go either way, but it could be a great trillogy in the 185 or it could get finished off at 205. Either way these 2 do need to fight again.

Hendo is my favorite fighter of all time and it seems a little out of character for him to make excuses. I'd love to hear/read the interview with him. Do you have a link or can you direct me to the interview? Thanks ...

I got it off sherdog...that is where they got it I forgot the title of the article, but it is at sherdog.com. I was thinking it was too, but once I saw it and read it I thought maybe he was trying to get something started so everyone would want the rematch...I really do.

Good points, but I'd state it more simply: Henderson is at the top level of his game. He is a professional and should act accordingly. Sadly, when people are at this level and they lose they feel a need to justify that loss. No justification needed. Silva is a monster. Henderson lost. There is NO shame in that. If Henderson had lost to someone not even ranked there would be better grounds for making excuses. Pride often gets in the way when it comes to combat sports. These guys are tremendous fighters and no one expects a flawless record at the end of your career. If you lose to the #1 P-4-P fighter in the world you don't take it as anything other than what it is: learning experience.

Yeah Henderson I thought was too good to be choked out like that...maybe he had a bad cut or he was out of his element or whatever, but the lucky comment was too much.

Hendo slipped on one of the logos and took a knee that stunned him. Then trying to recover on the ground, Silva took his back and threw an illegal elbow to the back of Hendo's head. A double violation that was not called or possibly seen by the ref. This all led to Henderson being submitted. Don't believe me, re-watch the fight.
Henderson hurt his back in training prior to fighting Rampage, which caused numbness in his legs and reduced his overall power. However, he didn't complain about that after he lost a close decision. Also, before he fought Wanderlei Silva for the first time he only had a couple of weeks to prepare for the fight and spent 10 days fighting off strep throat. Still, when he lost that fight he did not complain or make excuses.
Honestly, Henderson is a classy guy and a great sportsman. So if he complains or "makes excuses" there is probably a very legitimate reason for it. In the future do a little homework before you jump to the gun and start bashing a fighter.

I was saying that it was extremely out of character for him. I think he is a standup guy, and his comment was way out of character, and unprofessional. There is no excuses for losing a fight. THat's all there is to it.

first off... henderson didn't slip on the damn logo... anderson got him in a clinch and knee'd henderson in the face once with his right knee and then clipped him with his left knee.. and finally anderson never elbowed henderson to the back of his head..i think YOU need to rewatch the fight..if there was an illegal move SOMEONE would have saw it...

At about 2:28 of the 2nd round (an advertisement covers the clock) Hendo lands a right hand (Rogan: "Good right hand by Henderson") then throws a wild left and right before slipping on the Harley Davidson logo. This results in the knee from the clinch you mention, which stuns Henderson, resulting in a few more strikes landing and the fight going to the mat. You can then see the elbow to the back of the head near the end of the round at the 0:33 mark.

Henderson is a really proud and confident guy, and he thinks he can beat anybody in the world, which he could probably hang with most people, so I think any time he loses it really gets to him because he knows that he's fully cabaple of beating most fighters out there. I think the whole lucky comment might be from that slip that Ghost mentioned, which I remember from the fight, But I don't know for sure if that's what Dan meant. If they fight again I wouldnt be surprised at all if Hendo wins, but he needs to stick to the game plan.

That's kinda what I was saying, a professional should never go as far to get quoted by anyone saying it was "lucky", even if he feels that it was. Like back in the day when Don Frye actually did get lucky against Tank Abbott. Tank slipped on Don's blood then Don choked him out on the ground, but that's the way it goes in there. Luck has a lot to do with someone landing a punch out of no where...Those comments just shouldn't be made.
