The Cubs beat the Cardinals 2-1 behind an excellent pitching performance by Carlos Zambrano who just came back off the DL. He put in six solid innings where he gave up no runs while just allowing four hits as he struck out five and walked two. Zambrano improved his record to 9-3 on the season.
The Cubs got on the board early in the first inning as Kosuke Fukudome homered to give the Cubs a 1-0 lead. They later added another run in the fourth as Geovany Soto homered to put the Cubs up 2-0. That would be all the runs the Cubs would need to pick up the victory.
As for the Cardinals lone run it came in the bottom of the eighth on a Albert Pujols home run off of Bob Howry. Starter Bradon Looper went seven innings allowing the two earned runs on six hits while striking out five and walking one. With the loss Looper fell to 9-6 on the season.
With the victory the Cubs now sit at 52-35 with 3 1/2 game lead on the Cardinals.
Today the Cubs will send Ted Lilly to mound who is 9-5 with a 4.56 era as Kyle Lohse who is 10-2 with a 3.67 era gets the start for the Cardinals. Game time is set for 2:55 pm ct. as the game will be shown on Fox.
