Cubs lost 5-4 to the Cardinals after a ninth inning rally propelled them to a very important victory. Leading 4-2 going into the bottom of the ninth and with Kerry Wood closing out the game the Cubs felt very good about their chances. But when Adam Kennedy doubled in Ryan Ludwick and there was still a man at third the Cubs lead was now down to one. Kerry Wood had to very careful with the next batter Rick Ankiel, but Ankiel managed to hit a two-run single to give the Cardinals a 5-4 win.
The Cubs got on the board in the third inning when Mark Derosa homered, later in the top of the fifth the Cubs scored another run on a Ryan Theriot single that scored Mark Derosa. They pick up two more runs on Aramis Ramirez's 15th home run of the season.
Cubs starter Ted Lilly pitched six innings allowing two earned runs on seven hits while striking out five and walking one. However Kerry Wood took the loss as he blew the save and fell to 4-2 on the season. That was Wood's fifth blown save of the season.
As for the Cardinals two other runs they came in the bottom of the sixth, their first run came in on a Rick Ankiel home run then their second run came in on a Ryan Ludwick double which drove in Albert Pujols.
Starter Kyle Lohse put in seven innings allowing two earned runs on six hits while striking out six and walking two. However the victory went to Kyle McCelellan who is now 1-3 on the season.
Tomorrow the Cubs will look to take the rubber game of the series as Sean Marshall who is 0-2 with a 4.87 era gets the call for the Cubs and Todd Wellemeyer who is 7-3 with 3.86 era goes for the Cardinals.
With the loss the Cubs now sit at 52-36 and have a 2 1/2 game lead on the Cardinals.
