Offseason Moves the Oakland Raiders Must Make
Keeping Tom Cable and bringing in the offensive Minded Hue Jackson were a good start. Bringing in Pendergrast from Kansas City will help our defense as well.
If our offense can start to develop we could be much better than people expect. In order to build on a somewhat respectable 2009-2010 campaign, it is essential for Oakland to make these offseason moves in order to position themselves for a Wild card run.
Re-sign Richard Seymour to a Long Term Deal
Seymour who has recently been franchise tagged to the tune of $12.6 mil, must be resigned to a contract, plain and simple. This guy is what epitomizes the Oakland Raiders with his pillage and rape style of playing. Although he only had 4 sacks in '09, Seymour was forced to man the DT position because of the horrible tackling Oakland Linebackers.
Al gave up a first rounder (2011 Draft) for Seymour so do not expect him to be a two and out. Instead look for Richard to lead a new look run stuffing Oakland defense into the future, and get his new contract.
Release Thomas Howard
Boy does this kid have speed. Which is probably why Al Davis has held onto him for as long as he has. Yet year after year, the Raiders finish near the bottom of the pack in run defense.
Is it completely Howard's fault? No. But can he shed blockers and make a tackle when the team needs him to do so the most? Um, no. Being a solid blitz man Howard should be able to find a home somewhere else, but for a team the desperately needs to stop the run, no.
Draft Rolando McClain
McClain was simply the heart of the Bama defense, which without him, wouldn't have beaten the Mighty Gators or the Longhorns of Texas. Sure he has big daddy Terrance Cody plugging up the middle, which is why he would make a lot of those tackles but with Richard Seymour and Tommy Kelly at DTS, this guy is a freak athlete plain and simple.
Al loves speed and Rolando has plenty of it. Oakland should sign him at the eighth overall spot no questions asked. This guy's a winner.
Re-sign Kirk Morrison, Move Him to OLB
Morrison has been a fixture for in the Raiders starting lineup for his entire five year career now. Morrison is as sure a tackler as any in the league, amassing 100 for his fifth straight year. He doesn’t make many big plays from MLB position, but is the most consistent down-to-down player the Raiders have.
Of all their priorities this season, Seymour and Morrison should be one and two on the list, respectively. Drafting McClain and moving Morrison to the outside will give the raiders sure tacklers and should vastly improve their rush defense.
Use Darren Mcfadden as Kick/Punt Returner
This goes without saying but this freak athlete needs space to make plays. Using him effectively on kick returns (imagine the speed of Mcfadden and Heyward- Bey back there) and punt returns will only make this guy a better player and give him more confidence.
Do you know who was returning kicks for the Raiders during the latter part of the season? GARY F'N Russell, our backup fullback. I mean come on guys GARY RUSSELL? Since Darren hasn't done much in the rushing department, start designing plays where you can get him into space, and i cant think of a better one than on kick returns. Speed kills and DMAC has it.
As the coach across the bay once put it: "cannot play with them, cannot win with them, cannot coach with em, can't do it." Cut him and re-sign Bruce Gradkowski to a two-year contract.
Sign Alex Barron
This guy has been a disappointment thus far after being picked in the first round but has shown promise this past season. Doubtful that the Rams will resign him so, pay a little extra and get him Oakland, hey who knows he could be the next Lincoln Kennedy.
