The Philadelphia Flyers were on the short list of teams that Dan Boyle was willing to be traded to, as was Vancouver, Ottawa and obviously San Jose. However Paul Holmgren was apparently not willing to part with young assets to acquire an over priced veteran defenseman.
Good for him.
There was no realistic way the Flyers could have gotten Boyle and still remained under the cap. Any trade scenario that could've come down here is not what the Flyers would have needed.
It is true the Flyers do need a capable puck moving defenseman but not one with a six year $40 million contract and, for what its worth anymore, a no trade clause. To get Boyle they would have undoubtedly had to have given up players like Braydon Coburn, Mike Knuble or Joffery Lupul and a first rounder.
Ottawa also appears to have shot down any trade for the same reasons. It is not known for sure who Tampa wanted, but a fair guess would be Vermette and Meszaros and a first rounder.
I highly doubt Vancouver ever really threw itself into the mix since they already have seven NHL defenseman and their most pressing need is to bolster their offense. It was probably just a wish list from Boyle.
Which left the Sharks free to get their man. It is a very good deal for them. They get the offensive defenseman that they needed. And while they had to give up Matt Carle, a prospect and a first to get him the move didn't leave their team depleted.
They still have a great physical presence in Mclaren, Blake and Murray. And still have a promising future on the back line with Vlasic and Ehrhoff. A definite win-win situation for the Sharks and their fans.

I don't think this is the case at ALL!!!... Boyle said directly that SJ was his TOP choice... No one passed on him. SJ is where he wanted to go IF he had to go anywhere... Stop trying to minimize and realize that Doug Wilson is a genius!

incorrect my friend. when a player has a no trade clause a list is given by the player to the GM. No GM worth anything is going to go to only one team because then he would not be dealing from a position of strength. Feaster asked all the teams GMs on the list what can you give me and San Jose had the best package of players and picks. Now i would never doubt Wilson's genius ever. If it wasn't for the Luongo trade the Thorton trade would be the best steal in recent memory.
