On the fourth of July in the bottom of the 8th inning with the Cardinals trailing 2-0, Albert Pujols belted his 300th career home run lacing a solo shot off of the left field foul pole. After having the entire offense stymied by starter Carlos Zambrano this was the first sign of life the batting order had seen all night.
Zambrano making his first start after a stint on the disabled list limited the Cardinals to very few scoring opportunities and seemed to have his best stuff with men on base all night long. Upon going to the bullpen the Cardinals could do nothing more than they had early in the game outside the home run from Pujols.
Pujols's 300th home run on the fourth makes him the fifth youngest to achieve such a milestone and is 2nd on the list of most home runs in his first 8 seasons in the majors. Nonetheless, if the Cards are going to make a run at the Cubs through the all star break and especially this weekend, its going to be more than Pujols who is going to have to step up.

This was pretty disheartening. More unfortunate, however, was the way in which the umpire carried himself in the 9th inning.

i would have to completely agree with the way the umpire called pitches in the 9th inning. Troy Glaus is usually not one to argue and to see him flip out like that clearly shows that the pitch must have been extremely far off the plate.
