This year’s 2008 ESPY awards are going to be very exciting.  The nominees have recently been released, and I have already researched my picks and completed my voting for this year’s annual awards.

Unfortunately, the ESPY’s will be hosted by Justin Timberlake, who is obviously the first person I think of when sports are mentioned.  Obviously.

Best International Female Athlete

This was an easy pick for me, because Justin Henin won ten tournaments in 2007, and was the number one ranked female tennis player in the world for 2007 and 2008 when she retired.

Best International Male Athlete

This one was tough to choose, because Christiano Ronaldo is an unbelievable soccer player.  However, with a 70-15 record in 2007, including a French Open win, Rafael Nadal wins my pick for this category.

Best WNBA Player

This was once again an easy pick for me, because Lauren Jackson led the league in scoring and rebounds, showing that she can contribute on both sides of the ball.  She won the league MVP, and earned my vote for this category.

Best MLS Player

This was a toss-up for me between Landon Donovan and Luciano Emilio.  Donovan averaged more than a goal per game at the beginning of the 2008 season, and had eight goals and thirteen assists during 2007 season.  However, Emilio won the league MVP, and seemed to be a better player when I watched him against the LA Galaxy.

Best Outdoor Athlete

This was tough, because Lance Mackey won the Iditarod twice in a row, which is an unbelievably hard accomplishment.  However, Captain Scott Smiley

  1. Great stuff! I agree with almost every one!

    1. lol thanks andrew

    2. I did disagree with you record breaking performance. I would vote both Bonds and Brady/Moss before Favre.

    3. I agree with the exception of Candace Parker, Angela Tincher, no hitting the US Olympic team and putting VA Tech on her back to the College World Series, Tincher was hands down the best college athlete on the board. Ticher beat Jenny Finch, and VT ended a 185-0 USA winning streak in their pre- Olympic exhibitions dating back to 1995.

  2. i agree with all except best team. i think the celtics were better than the wings. great stuff though alan

    1. He's a hockey fan so there is no changing that. :D

    2. haha ur sooooo right andrew

  3. I agreed with all except for best baseball player. Jimmy Rollins had a great year but Alex Rodriguez had an unbelievable year. If you look at their stats there is no comparison. While rollins dominated at things like steals and triples a-rod dominated at things like batting average, home runs, rbi's, runs, slg%, obp%. although a-rod commited more errors it was only 2 more. His 13 to jimmys 11. I am not trying to take anything away from rollins but his numbers dont even touch a-rods cleats. Another thing is that there was no controversy as to who would win the AL MVP. There are still arguments that Rollins shouldn't have won his MVP and that it should have gone to Holliday or Wright.

  4. "I took off A-Rod, because he was not as dominant in his sport as Brady or Woods were."

I was just wondering if you came out of acoma recently and missed the 2007 mlb season. He did dominate. lol

    1. yeah, but i still think brady and woods were much more dominant. i didnt say hje didnt dominate, i said he wasnt as dominant as brady and woods

  5. Agree with pretty much all you've said here. Alex Ovechkin is the best player to come into this league in quite some time. Shame he's locked up in Washington for the next zillion years.

    1. yeah i know...i wish he was on the flyers

  6. Well I can't agree with you there. Wouldn't mind seeing him in Broadway Blue. But no matter. I'm sure we'll get him when he's 38 years old and can barely lace up his skates much less score.

    1. sounds like sats to me

  7. i love golf, i just disagree that golfers should be in the "athlete" corner. I mean look at guys like John Daly. Best athlete should go to a guy like Micheal Phelps.

    1. That is exactly why Daly isn't a nominee. Some golfers are great athletes, some aren't. Tiger is a great athlete.

  8. Appalachian State is not division II, they are D-1AA. At least try and do a little research. Moron.

    1. Ok, Rubber Biscuit settle down. It's not that big of a deal you need to resort to childish name-calling.

    2. and nice of you to join bleacher report simply to comment on this. really appreciate it.

  9. The choices for best sports movie are so horrible this year. Semi Pro was kinda funny, but not that great. The Game Plan? I mean come on with this stuff.

Where is Miracle? Glory Road? Remember the Titans? Those sports movies blow these out of the water so bad it's not even funny. We need some better sports movies.

    1. yeah i know. we need some really good ones. another great sports moment to make a movie about

  10. I agree with all your choices, except 2. I think the Celtics deserve best team, and the Superbowl in my opinion was the biggest upset. no one thought the Giants would win, and for them to beat the undefeated team like that, I think a lot of people were surprised.

And I compeltely agree with Justin also. Where the hell is Glory Road for best sports movie? In ten years they'll probably make a movie about the Celtics' road to victory.

    1. idk about the super bowl, because although the pats were such huge favorites, i think many fans had the feeling that the giants had a big chance to pull it off. i know that SI and SN chose the giants to win the super bowl

    2. I have to agree with TJ here. Many fans outside of New York definitely didn't give them a chance in hell. The reason SI and SN among others chose the Giants is because if they were right, they would look like geniuses, but if the Pats won, well, everyone picked them, right? See the logic? Good article though for sure!!! One of the best writers on this site, Mr. Bass.

  11. Mr. Bass......
Appalachian State University won because the team was that goooooood.....not
because Michigan was so bad.....don't get it twisted! App went on to be the only
team in Division IA or IAA to win the Division 1 National Championship three years
    in a row!!!!!!!

Stay tuned for the August 30 game with the Div 1A Champions LSU against the
Division IAA Champions, ASU... and by the way ASU is Division I not Division II!
Maybe you are not a moron...but you are not very well informed to be a sports
    writer.

  12. "I hope that no one votes for the Appalachian State game"

REALLY! First of all that's crap. Even if I wasn't an App grad, I'd still call b***sh*t on this....
Do you think these pro players give a damn about an ESPY?

Appalachian went into the Big House and dominated the #5 team in the country. It doesn't matter what Michigan does the following Saturday or any Saturday for the rest of eternity.

On September 1st, Michgan was #5..... and Appalachian didn't have a chance in hell. The Giants over New England???? It's the damn SUPER BOWL!!!!! That's not an upset..... The Giants did exactly what anyone who pulls for the Giant EXPECTED THEM TO DO! By definition.... not an upset.

Not ONE person from ASU thought we could beat Michigan. And if they say they thought so.... they're a liar.

Freson? They'd already beaten Rice, Arizona State and the Tar Heels... It wasn't an upset for Fresno St. to win. At that point, you've got to expect to win. And they did.

And Da Tara!!!! HA HA HA HA... that's not even close to an upset. Big Brown laid up. If you wanna call that an upset, then everytime I let my 8 year old cousin beat me at basketball, I deserve an ESPY.

No sir.... Appacalchain State over Michigan is the purest most amazing win in College Football. Not ONLY THAT.....

But take into account that the Mountaineers not only came back from a 32-31 deficit. But the blocked TWO field goals and marched down the field in under 2 minutes.

    Take that jerk.

    1. well obviously the country doesn't agree with you, because app state didn't win, drew

  13. Oh yeah.... and they claim the fans vote for the ESPY. I call Shinnagans.... The Giants are the bigger draw.

Nobody in the country aside from anti-michgan fans and Appalachian fans want to see Jerry Moore on stage in LA.

    1. yes, the giants are absolutely the bigger draw, that's why they won, because they have more fans. dude, calm down, just because your team didn't win an espy doesn't mean you can flip out. its not even important, it's a freakin espy

    2. I know... I saw it.

Well if you can watch this without getting goosebumps.... and those kids from Happy Appy, who fought their hearts out don't make you smile.... you have no soul.

Then watch this... and you can fall off your chair laughing.....

    3. Not freakin out.... "dude"

      Just saying.

      Shinnanagans.
