The New York Rangers and free-agent defenseman Paul Mara have reached agreement on a one-year contract extension. The deal calls for Mara to receive $1.95 million next season.
Mara, acquired from the Boston Bruins in February of 2007, was brought in to provide some punch to the Rangers powerplay. But Mara often struggled in that role and had a hard time cracking Tom Renney's lineup toward the end of last season.
Mara will round out a completely revamped Rangers defensive corps, which now includes former all-star Wade Redden and Dmitri Kalinin. Mara will likely pair with Kalinin on the third defense pairing.

good signing, he is a good defenseman

Yeah it's a good signing. It's probably a stop-gap measure. Truth is I'd rather have Mara than Kalinin. I'd have filled Kalinin's spot with Corey Potter.

Good chance Kalinin gets moved at some point during the season. Mara's a good signing one year less than $2M
