2010 Winter Olympics TV Schedule: What To Watch on Feb. 23
Curling dominates much of the day's events, but much of the attention will land squarely on Team Canada which returns to the ice for the first time since its disappointing loss (to the home country) to the United States on Sunday.
Tuesday's schedule is a comparatively lighter won with only six medals to be handed out, including the first in Women's Ski Cross as well as the Men's 10,000-meter Speed Skating. Here is a preview of today's headlining events.
Men's Hockey Playoff Qualifier: Canada v. Germany
As mentioned, Team Canada hits the ice one day sooner than it originally anticipated when the 2010 Olympics started. Canada finds itself starting a four-game, six-day path towards the gold medal when it faces off against Germany today at 4:30 PM local time.
Canada should get by Germany, but a date with Team Russia looms on the horizon in a match very few thought we'd see before the gold medal game.
Men's Hockey Playoff Qualifier: Czech Republic v. Latvia
The Czech Republic looks to rebound following a pool play-concluding loss to Russia. The Czech Republic takes on Latvia at 7 PM local time and should be heavily favored to advance to quarter-final action against Finland. The Czech Republic dispatched of Latvia 5-2 during pool play.
Slovakia and Norway wrap up the day's qualifying games when they matchup at 8:00 PM. The two sides combined for only one win during pool play and the winner will get Sweden in the quarter-finals.
Men's Giant Slalom - Qualifying Runs 1 & 2
Another face of U.S. Men's Alpine skiing is favored to take the podium in the Men's Giant Slalom which gets underway today in the first two qualifying runs. Ted Ligety, who won the bronze medal in this event at the 2009 World Championships, is among the favorites to take home a medal.
Aksel Lund Svindal, who won gold in the Super G and silver in the Downhill, should also be in competition for a medal.
The first run goes off at 9:30 AM local time with the second run to follow at 1:00 PM local time.
Women's Ski Cross
The first medals in Women's Ski Cross will be handed out today starting with the first qualifying run at 10:30 AM local time and the gold medal run at approximately 2:00 PM local time.
France's Ophelie David (pictured) is a four-time gold medalist at the X Games and is the favorite to take gold at the Olympics. Canadian Ashleigh McIvor should be run on David's heels for the top of the podium.
Women's Figure Skating - Short Program
Arguably the most storied Winter Olympic event, women's figure skating, gets underway today with the Ladies' Short Program. Kim Yu-Na of South Korea is the reigning World Champion and favorite to take the gold in Vancouver. Yu-Na, Canadian favorite Joannie Rochette and Mao Asada of Japan hit the ice at 4:30 PM local time.
For the first time in recent memory, however, there is not a heavy American favorite. Rachael Flatt is the leading American candidate, but figures to be a long shot medal candidate.
Women's Bobsled Heats 1 & 2
Women's Bobsled gets underway today with the first two heats set for 5:00 PM and approximately 6:00 PM local time. Like the luge and doubles luge, Germany is again the favorite led by driver Cathleen Martini and her team.
Germany's second team led by Sandra Kiriasis should be in contention to land on the podium, as well as Team Canada led by Kaillie Humphries and the USA sled, driven by Shauna Rohbock, figures to enter the fight for a medal.
