The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported today that the Penguins' attempt to fill the remaining holes in their roster may stretch across the Atlantic Ocean to include Finnish forward Janne Pesonen.

Pesonen, 26, plays for Karpat in Finland's Elite League, and is a free agent this summer.

Pesonen, drafted in the ninth round of the 2004 entry draft by the Anaheim Ducks, won the scoring race this past season in Finland, totaling 78 points (34 G, 44 A) in 56 games.

The Penguins have not commented on their efforts to sign Pesonen, who has also received offers from teams in Russia and Switzerland this summer.

Pesonen reportedly told a Finnish radio station this morning that he will accept a one-year deal to play in Pittsburgh.

Janne Pesonen seems like he could be a good fit for the Penguins in the short term, and perhaps even gain a contract extension after this season if he turns out to be the scoring winger they have been searching for.
