In a move that will surprise few the Indians cut ties with 2007 saves leader Joe Borowski, designating him for assignment today. This move comes on the heels of Eric Wedge's statements that the club would be evaluating their bullpen, seldom used righty Rick Bauer was also designated to make room for the return of Jensen Lewis and Brian Slocum from AAA Buffalo.

On the season, Borowski was 1-3 and 6-10 in save situations with an ERA of 7.56 and a WHIP of 1.920. After blowing two of his first four save situations Borowski was placed on the disabled list in April and rejoined the club in late May.

While he was away the team relied upon a closer by committee system, which is most likely how the role will be handled once again. The committee system will work the best for Wedge, who is attempting to limit the number of innings that Rafael Perez, Rafael Betancourt and Masa Kobayashi (the most likely candidates for the job) pitch.

Lewis was on the opening day roster, however had a hard time regaining command and velocity. He was sent down five weeks ago, making 11 appearances for Buffalo, going 1-3 with a 3.60 ERA.

Converted starter Slocum made seven appearances at Buffalo, compiling a 1-0 record with a 0.69 ERA.

In past weeks the Tribe have been linked with the Colorado Rockies in the trade market. The Rockies have been looking to unload Brian Fuentes, perhaps this move could be significant in the not-so-distant future as the Indians look to clarify the closers role.

Update:

According to ESPN.com Mark Shapiro views the closer role as an issue that will need to be addressed during the off season. This is the first signal that the management has given that they are looking towards 2009 rather than working on this season.

Eric Wedge has also stated that most save opportunities will go to Masa Kobyashi or Rafael Betancourt, who have 4 saves each.
