The mother of Canada’s Olympic figure skater Joannie Rochette has passed away today at age 55 in a hospital in Vancouver. The cause of death for Therese Rochette has not yet been determined.

Joannie Rochette is Canada’s best hope of winning a figure skating medal at these Olympic Games, but now it will be extremely difficult for her to focus on competing with her mother not being able to see her perform.

Officials have stated that Rochette still intends to compete which is very brave of her. Her first performance will take place on Tuesday with the women’s short program.
