As we all know, the Boston Celtics were the best team in the league last year. Best in the regular season, and of course best in the playoffs, because they won it all. But now, it looks like they might get even better.
Recent reports from the Boston Globe say that free agent guard/forward Corey Maggette is seriously considering an offer from the Celtics to join their team.
Last season, Maggette averaged 22.1 points, 5.6 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 1 steal a game in 70 games with the Clippers last season.
Although Maggette is a great player and he would be going to a great team, where would he fit? He is a small forward, so therefore to start he would have to take the spot of Paul Pierce, which won't happen.
Even though he wouldn't be able to be a starter, I am sure he wouldn't mind going to the Celtics so he can win a championship. And I am sure the Celtics would definitely love having a player as skilled as Maggette coming off the bench so they could repeat.
The kinks of the deal aren't worked out yet and the amount of money hasn't been released to the press, but if this deal does go through, the chances of the Celtics repeating just sky rocketed.

TJ, I had to comment on this article and see what other people had to say. I really like Corey Maggette, but I think he is a terrible fit for the Celtics.
The Celtics already have Pierce, as you mentioned, but they also just acquired JR Giddens and Bill Walker on draft day. Pierce plays the same position as Maggette, and Giddens and Walker are younger clones: great/athletic offense at the SG/SF spot.
I'd be really disappointed by this signing. I think the money can be spent in a more intelligent way.

I agree with you, except for how else could they spend their money, who are some good players still left in free agency they could pick up? Your team can never be to stacked....

I think Maggette ia a very good offensive player but I don't know about his defense. Pierce can play the 2 so If Ray Allen plays less minutes (say 30 vs. 36) and Tony Allen is gone (18 ) that leaves 24 for Maggette the same amount Posey played this year. However if he is not capable or willing to play tough D it may not be worth it, particularly if it precludes us resigning Posey. Larry

san antonio's newspaper also said a deal was close between maggette and spurs. one of the newspapers has to be lying.

or he could just be seriously thinking about both.

While all the talk has been about Posey,Magette and the players, I am surprised we do not hear much about the C's efforts to keep Coach Tibbs. I think his presence on the coaching staff was as much a factor on winning the championship as the composition of the bench and the role players,

Posey plays much better D and can shoot the perimeter. He is by far a better player then Maggette. I hope we keep James.

Posey a better player than Corey Maggette? I'm glad you're not the Celtics' GM.

Corey can play the 2 or the 3, but the Celtics have Ray ray too. He is not going to sign until he is sure that the money in Philly and Golden State is spent. He thinks he can get that money and he may be right. Philly may lost out on Josh Smith, Elton Brand, and may have to settle for signing Magette.
Best case scenario for Philly is they trade Iguodola (sign then trade) to Golden State for Harrington, then sign Maggette. Philly would have Dalembert, Harrington, Young, Maggette, Miller and that would put Willie Green on the bench and still allow Young to develop. Reggie Evans would also get the bench.

They can't trade Iguodala, he is the future of their team and will be better then Maggette. Sign him then keep him.

That is not the word around Philly, they are so disapointed in him from last year. He can run and run and run, but can not create. The time that Thaddeus Young got on the court, showed up AI 2. Young is the same player, and has more potential, so they can afford to grow with young and get rid of AI. They obviously are going to sign one year deals with this years money, and then hit next years free agency hard when all the stars are there. It makes send for them to sign and trade Iggy for Al Harrington. Harrington has one year, 9.6 million on his deal. Andre Miller and Harrington would clear almost 20 million and whatever they left over from this year. So 22 million dollars in the big free agent year is alot of money. Patience is key, and it make help them. If they spend over 8 million for Iguodola, they are crazy. that is like saying Gilbert Arenas is worth all that money, Gilbert will never win, with that contract on a team. Iguodola should never be paid with more than a 2nd or 3rd option.
