The UFC & The Decline Of PPV
I did not miss a single PPV event from the UFC in 2009, here it is February 2010 and I have already taken a pass on two of three events of the year that the UFC has put on. My reasoning is simple and I am not going to go over fight cards here, you can look them up yourself. The UFC has become so hooked to the revenue stream of PPV they are willing to throw the most mediocre card on line from remote locations and hope you don't notice.
Before I go any further, I love the UFC, I think Dana White is brilliant and the organization is top notch. That does not prevent them from making the same mistakes many have made before them.
I spent 30 years working in retail and for a long time there were only two types of retailers, one that sold a higher quality product, made a decent profit on each one they sold and only sold a few; the other sold a lesser quality product for much cheaper, made less money on each one but sold a ton, they chose quantity over quality.
I would rather see 4 to 6 high quality PPV events a year than 10 to 12 events that just don't get me excited. Last nights event from Sydney was highly predictable and lacked much of the emotion that used to frame PPV events.
Last nights Velasquez - Nogueira fight was really the only PPV worthy fight on the card and at best it was a co-main event. It could easily have been combined with GSP - Hardy to make a premier PPV event.
I realize there are those who will disagree. My only credibility is this, I bought 100% of PPV cards in 2009 and so far have bought 33% in 2010. The UFC cannot afford for many to take my path or the panic will set in and the cards will get even worse.
