Could driving a NASCAR be an athletic event, and therefore mean that the driver is an athlete

Considering NASCAR drivers as being athletes is a stretch for me.

I can see Horse racing as being a sport for both the equine and human athlete involved: a "twofer" sport if you will. and it takes a lot of conditioning for rider and horse to make a winning team.

Driving cars fast is not an athletic venture in my opinion.

My husband used to drive extremely fast.

A neighbor woman accused him of knocking over her trash cans with the draft from his black 1961 Chevrolet Impala convertible which had a 348 cubic inch engine and three two barrel carburetors, solid lifters, three quarter race cam and 350 horse power.

For some reason every time we took a trip it involved having to get somewhere very fast with minimal stops allowed, meaning for gas, oil, tire or engine emergencies only.

When I was lucky these stops coincided with "my" emergency pit stops to avail myself of the dismal gas station rest rooms.

When our stop needs didn't coincide I was often compelled to use a container of some sort to relieve myself in; not an easy task when a vehicle is stopped, let alone with me trying not to be visible to other drivers of the vehicles the mad man driving is trying to pass in his race to our destination.

True we never had a tire fly off, hit a wall, or brushed another car causing it or us to spin out of control, but did that qualify as an athletic event and put him on par with a NASCAR driver?

My husband's dream is to go to a track and either drive or ride with a race car driver.  I doubt this will ever happen if he has to enter the car through a window; but, hey, maybe that is where the athletic part comes in, right?
