Things haven't gone well for Alex Smith during that last few years. After he was drafted first overall in the 2005 draft he's been hurt, replaced, taken a pay cut, and lost multiple coordinators. This last year we caught a glimpse of why the 49ers drafted him. Alex won his job back, and had a decent year. He completed over 60% of his passes, and for the first time threw more Touchdowns than INT's. Despite Alex's reemergence very few people who still believe Alex Smith has the talent to be a top 5 Quarterback in the NFL. I am one of them. Here are 5 reasons that Alex Smith will have a huge year and become and elite QB.

Jimmy Raye
Jimmy Raye is going to be the first offensive coordinator that Alex Smith will have for more than one year. This is huge. Alex Smith is a cerebral QB. To secede Alex needs to know everything that every player is doing on every play. He has not had that opportunity with the turn over in coordinators in San Francisco. Smith hasn't had the chance to fully learn a system. He will this year.
The Return of the Running Game
Through the first 13 games of the 2009 season Frank Gore went over 100 yards twice. Over the last 4 games of the season Frank had 3 100 yard games. The 49ers Didn't understand how to use frank when they changed to the Spread offense it looks like they are starting to figure it out. To be a great QB you have to at least have the threat of running the ball. Alex will have that this year.
The Draft
The 49ers have the 13th and 17th selections in the draft. Alex Smith will get help with at least one of those picks. In a perfect scenario for Alex Smith, The 49ers will be able to pick C.J Spiller and Trent Williams. This will give Alex a home run threat and a solid right tackle. Not to mention Spiller's return ability would help smith by giving him better field position.
Young Receivers
With the emergence of Crabtree the 49ers have a legit number one option at receiver. Crabtree is good but he isn't enough. If Alex Smith is going to be a top 5 QB he will need big years out of Josh Morgan and Jason Hill. Both of these guys looked like they were going to have break out years in 2009. It didn't happen. But the 49er faithful is hoping that this is the year for them. If they play up to their potential. Alex will have a big year.
Ability
The 49ers drafted Alex with the 1st pick in 2005 because of his physical skills and his potential. In 2009 we saw flashes of greatness out of him. Yes they were only flashes but the ability is there. This is going to be one of the first years that Alex isn't coming back from an injury, and the first year where Alex has a chance to succeed.
Conclusion
This is going to be a make or break season for Alex. If he succeeds then we will look back on this season and have a great story of redemption. If he plays bad then he's a bust and the 49ers will be looking for another QB next year. But you heard it here first, I'm going with the redemption and beyond. 2010 is the year Alex breaks out, and breaks in to the top 5 best QBs in the NFL.
