Senators Set Record While Blowing by the Maple Leafs

IconLast night was the third round of the battle of Ontario.

Unlike the first two games, Toronto had some help with the returning Mark Bell and Kyle Wellwood, although it wouldn't help much.

16 minutes into the first period, Chris Phillips and Patrick Eaves each scored only 47 seconds apart, boosting the Sens to a 2-0 lead.

That's when most Leaf fans shut off the T.V.

Daniel Alfredsson scored a shorthanded goal early in the second to make it 3-0. Andrej Meszaros then lifted the Sens to a 4-0 lead with a goal on the power play later in the same period.

Then, as the second period was coming to a close, Nik Antropov spoiled Martin Gerber's shutout bid with a power-play goal.

Chris Kelly quickly followed with one last goal to boost Ottawa to a 5-1 victory.

Martin Gerber had 30 saves for the Sens, while Vesa Toskala was chased out of the net after Meszaros' score in the second period.

As this battle was raging, the Senators were also chasing history—not just goalies.

Ottawa broke the record for best start to a season—set by the Buffalo Sabres just a year ago—in tallying 25 points through just 14 games. Congratulations, Sens!
