Denver Broncos Offseason: Thoughts, Wishes, and Amusement
The Denver Broncos will probably have another interesting off season. Granted I don't think it will have all the craziness that last year did, but we still need improvements.
The secondary is getting old, the zone blocking scheme is gone, and who knows what will happen with Brandon Marshall. I'm here to give some wishful thinking, pick ups, and my thoughts on Denver's situations.
So here we go.
Changing to the Power Run Game
I hate to get rid of one old player and replace him with another, but Mawae is a veteran I would like to have. He is part of the O-Line that helped get Chris Johnson over 2000 yards.
Casey Wiegmann just didn't play up to his '08 level. I don't know how big of an upgrade it would be or how much money it would cost us, but he seems like a solid pick up. I like the way Mawae isn't afraid to get his hands dirty. In a division with good rivalvry games I want Mawae on my team.
Curtis Martin, Chris Johnson, Lendale White, and Travis Henry all had 1,000 plus yards with Mawae on the line. I wouldn't mind seeing Knowshon Moreno added to that list. Don't forget he is an eight time pro-bowler.
Our defense is starting to get a little more smash mouth with Dawkins, so lets add some smash mouth on the offensive side.
Alternative Option- Bobbie Williams- Bengals Guard
Let a Veteran Show Him the Way
Let me start by saying I like Correll Buckhalter, but he has to stay healthy. It was hard for Moreno, because he was learning by himself. Peyton Hillis didn't have enough experience to help teach Moreno, and Buckhalter wasn't healthy.
How about adding a Chester Taylor, Jamal Lews, or Willie Parker? I'd rather have Chester Taylor out of the three, because I think he is more of a recieving threat as well. Besides Adrian Peterson's fumble problem, it seems Chester Taylor has helped him out. I understand Peterson is a natural talent, but someone had to help teach him the little things.
I would probably take which ever one came the cheapest, which at this point will probably be Jamal Lewis. I would estimate Chester Taylor a little below the $3M he got last year and Parker should be well below his $3.9 million he got last year.
Anchor The Line
I'm not going to spend to much time on Wilfork, because simply put if he is available we need him.
He may not even become a free agent, but Wilfork is a beast. He has ties to McDaniels and would be an instant improvement for our run defense. I would think if he becomes available McDaniels would instantly be interested in bringing him in.
Alternative Option- Casey Hampton
He is only 28 and could help our defense out for years. He would offer instant improvement and depth to the defensive line.
One More Impact Player
6'1 240 lb inside linebacker. Pierce just became a free agent and I'm curious about what he could bring to the Denver D. Andra Davis had flashes of being good, but just didn't stay consistent. Pierce would add more depth to our linebackers and allow Davis to rotate in.
Obviously if we draft McClain we wouldn't take Pierce, but if we wanted to draft a different position, I would suggest picking up Pierce. I don't believe he is to familiar with the 3-4, but neither were our linebackers last year.
Alternate option- Joey Porter
Another WR threat
At 6'3 215 Walter is another big target that could allow Royal to focus on the slot position. Walter has experience in a top notch passing game and competed in one of the best divisions. I feel like we are pretty good at the WR position, but you can always add another weapon.
Stokley is old and Scheffler is probably on his way out. Walter looks like a good option for McDaniels system. Adding Walter would allow us to run more of the '07 Patriots passing style. Marshall and Walter on the outside with Royal and Gaffney in the slots. I like the sound of that.
Alternate Option- Terrell Owens or Antonio Bryant
P.S. I hope we keep B-Marsh
Obviously all of these signings won't happen. I believe that any of the signings could help our team out though. I am fully behind McDaniels, but he still has a lot to prove to the Denver Bronco Nation.
Out of all the signings I hope Wilfork becomes available to sign. If Buckhalter can stay healthy I like him in our offense. Hopefully we draft McClain and won't need Pierce. I would like to see us add some veteran interior line members.
Thanks for your time. Let me know your thoughts and which of the signings you prefer to happen.
