Lightning ask Boyle to Waive Goodbye to the Bay

Bleacher ReportAnalyst IJuly 3, 2008

Is it smart? Maybe. The reason that I say maybe is because the lightning need cap space, but how much? If they just want to sign Steven Stamkos then they should have plenty of cap because I believe that you can not sign someone to an entry level contract more than, I think its $740,000.

If they were to trade Boyle, the most cap room that they could receive would be about $3,210 000.  So overall, they won't gain much more room, with that they might be able to sign someone like Branislav Mezei (who I ranked 11th) at a salary of about $1-2 million a year.

Branislav Mezei is a shutdown defenseman who could take over the role of Dan Boyle on the defensive side, but nowhere near the offense.  I still think that the Lightning could trade someone like Philip Kuba who is making about the same and you could possibly get the same value for by throwing in maybe a second rounder.

I think that at this point they could even throw in their 2010 first rounder because they are built for the future. The reason I say for the first rounder in 2010 is because you don't want to take the risk of throwing in this years pick just in case things go wrong.

But if something does go wrong, this team will have problems. Here is my list of players that I think have a safe job with the Bolts this year.
