The 5 Worst Gimmicks in Wrestling
Throughout history we have seen plenty of gimmicks in wrestling that have been weird, strange, bizarre and downright stupid. What's amazing is that some of these bizarre characters were actually given a push and put in the main event scene.
The purpose of this slideshow is to outline what I believe to be the 5 worst gimmicks that I have seen in wrestling.
#5 - Seven
This was a short lived albeit horrible gimmick for Dustin Runnels, the master of terrible gimmicks, when he returned to WCW from his stint as Goldust. His gimmick was that of a creepy person who would wear face paint and stand outside of childeren's bedroom windows. Thankfully this gimmick was stopped as there were concerns that he was a child abductor or possibly a paedophile.
There's no place for gimmicks like this in wrestling.
#4 - Oz
Before Kevin Nash found fame as Diesel in the WWF and was a star in WCW, he had a terrible and short lived gimmick as the character Oz. This character was a mystical character based on the Wizard of Oz. What's funny is that this character would week in week out squash his opponents and was then put into a feud with top guys at the time like Ron Simmons.
Thankfully for Nash that this gimmick didn't ruin his career and he was able to win the top titles in the WWF as well as WCW.
#3 - The Dungeon of Doom
This has to be one of the worst gimmicks in wrestling and in my opinion the worst stable ever. This group was in the WCW and was led by Kevin Sullivan and consisted of members with very bizarre gimmicks such as The Shark (Earthquake), Kamala, The Yeti, Zodiac etc. The group even had top guys at the time like The Giant, One Man Gang, Vader and Meng. They were given the task by a mystical figure to get rid of Hulk Hogan from WCW.
What's actually funny is that this group got a significant push and were trying to be presented as a legitimate threat to Hulk Hogan. This feud culminated with a Tower of Doom match at Uncensored which had to be one of the worst matches I've ever seen. This story was produced while WCW was competing head to head with WWF on Mondays. There must be hope for TNA after all.
#2 - The Gobbledygooker
Prior to its debut, the Gobbledygooker was heavily hyped on TV and was in an egg for weeks leading up to Survivor Series. It was intended to be a permanent mascot for the PPV but audiences hated this character and found it to be completely ridiculous.
The gimmick was so bad that Wrestlecrap named their annual award for the worst wrestling gimmick the "Gobbledygooker Award". It's a shame that underneath the turkey costume was a talented wrestler by the name of Hector Guerrero, the brother of Eddie.
#1 - The Shockmaster
The Shockmaster was without a doubt the worst gimmick in my opinion. He was from outer space and wore a storm trooper helmet covered in glitter. Enough said. He was brought into WCW as a serious threat to top heels Sid Vicious, Vader and Harlem Heat.
Thankfully for WCW he tripped over while trying to break through a wall and exposed this character as a klutz in one of the most embarassing and hilarious moments in wrestling, which stopped his push as a viable contender. This character and moment possibly ruined the career of Fred Ottman who had prior success in the WWF, which is unfortunate.
