NHL: Wings Land Hossa, Signing Of The Year?

I am still in disbelief. THE best free agent out there has basically thrown away $70 million dollars to come to a team that he believes has the best shot at winning the cup. Now that shows the will to win and everyone now knows they better look out for Marian Hossa next year because he is hungry for the championship.

With his new one year, 7.4 million dollar deal freshly signed, Hossa made it clear that he realizes this could either be the worst or best decision of his life, but he really wants that cup. Before this signing, the Wings already had the exact same roster they iced to win the cup last year and adding a top ten scorer makes it all the much better.

With Hossa now on the team, Detroit has five bonafide superstars with Hossa, Datsyuk, Zetterberg, Lidstrom, and Rafalski. Round that out with budding youngsters Hudler, Franzen, Kronwall and Filppula plus amazing role players such as Holmstrom, Stuart, Cleary, Helm, and Kopecky the Wings have an even better chance of winning it next year then they did this year.

This signing was unexpected by everyone, including all the sources who have the inside track. With eight year, 80 million dollar offers on the table Hossa was expected to join a team such as the Oilers or Penguins. In the end, Hossa proved winning is everything to him and he was willing to take the one year deal.

The reason the Wings are able to only offer such a short-term deal is stars such as Henrik Zetterberg and Johan Franzen will need long-term extensions at the end of the year.

Now, does this guarantee the Wings a repeat cup-winning season? No, nothing is ever for sure in the NHL but what this does do is give them a better roster then last years cup winning team and it gives them the scariest top two lines in the entire league. Kudos to Ken Holland and Marian Hossa for making this happen.
