There are a million and one reasons to dislike Greivis Vasquez, but I’ll just name a few. For starters, Vasquez is the kind of guy who claims that Cameron Indoor is “his house” going into a game against Duke. He also claimed that Memphis “would have a losing record in the league[ACC]” if they weren’t in C-USA, this time leading into a Maryland v. Memphis match-up. Finally, there is just that “it” factor that he possesses that makes fans despise every fist-pump, yell, or flex that he does when he is doing well. Congratulations Vasquez, you are officially the new Greg Paulus of the ACC.
While I’m not sure I could love to make fun of anyone more than the kid who ran away from Duke’s basketball program (idiot), you are certainly growing on me every day.
Cassell Coliseum has been notoriously hateful to Vazquez starting in his first appearance as a freshmen in which the crowd ate him alive and he had one of the worst performances of his career. However, the last two years he has made up for it with good performances against Tech. I am sure he and Tech fans will both remember each other and come into this game with a high level of intensity. It is up to Delaney to lead the charge and match that intensity to ward off the surging terrapin team.
Maryland will be well prepared and if they beat Duke they could be fighting to maintain their first place spot in the ACC. This one will not be easy, there will be lots of fouls, Jeff Allen might get thrown out, and the result could really go either way. If VT pulls off the win here, then we seriously help our tournament bid status, but as long as it's not a blowout we will still be up for strong consideration.
By the way, both Duke and Memphis destroyed Maryland in those games I mentioned. Let’s only hope Vasquez has something to say about the Hokies before this one.
