That is the one word I would use to describe this Mets team. Inconsistency.

Yesterday's game was one of the ugliest baseball games of the year. 3 errors and a horrendous pitching performance coupled with insomnia-plagued bats equals a massive defeat.

John Maine looked like a little league pitcher. You know how in little league pitchers have no control and basically every batter gets to a 3-2 count. That was Maine yesterday. Walks, hits, inability to get batters out.

Maine is starting to remind me of Al Leiter in the fact that he can't pitch well in the first three innings. Remember how Leiter would give up 3 runs in the first inning and then pitch a shutout the rest of the game? That's Maine except that he's not pitching shutouts in the remaining innings.

Is Pelfrey really becoming our second best starter? I shutter at the thought.

Wake up bats! The Mets have lost 5 out of their last 8 games and except for the 15 run smack down of the Yanks on Friday afternoon the Met bats are MIA. If they don't start hitting we could easily find ourselves 8 games back and 5 games under .500 before the All Star break.

  1. I can't agree with you in this regard. John Maine has excellent "stuff" as a starter. He does get into trouble early in games, but so do the other 4 pitchers on the staff. Its been known for a long time that if you don't get to Pedro early, he shuts you down. Oliver and Santana are always better late in games.

If I did have one comment for Maine it would be that he needs to learn to keep his pitch count down. He generally (even in games where he is shutting a team out), is up around 100 pitches by the 5th or 6th inning. If he can work an that, with his electric fastball, he will be a dominant starter. Everyone has a bad start, and honestly, its wasn't that bad (compared to other "really bad" starts).

As for your comment about Mike Pelfrey. You said that you shutter at the thought of him being the second best pitcher on the team. I am curious why you are shuttering??

He was a number one draft pick and was highly touted for years. He now, in 2008 has finally hit his stride as a starting pitcher and should be the #3 starter for years to come behind Santana and Maine.

Good article...check out mine and feel free to leave me some comments...
